I am fishing a local rodeo this weekend in Morgan City. I have been bass fishing most of my life and I have been out countless times the last few weeks From Pierre Part all the way to Bayou Penchant and cannot get on a good bite to save my life. My eight year old son is going to fish this with me and he is excited for it but I think he will be let down.

I know the water is high right now which doesn't help. I am not asking for fishing spots or anything like that, just wondering what everyone else is experiencing with bass fishing currently.

Its tough to catch bass in SE La right now. Drains coming out of the marsh and all the points and corners - anywhere you can find mixing water. Those will be your best options this time of year in that area.

Yeah, I have been hitting all of the obvious places and I don't really care if we don't place, I just want his first experience to be a good one. I haven't been letting him come with me to scout because I don't want him to be discouraged before the tournament. I think I am going to take off of work Thursday and check a few spots further south. It may be my best bet.

Hurricanes, the drought a couple years ago and the serious salt water intrusion we incurred - I've been bass fishing all over SE LA my entire life. The last two years is probably the worst i've ever seen it. Especially in the bayou black area. Of course there are some exceptions, but even the places that do have fish, don't have many big ones.

I am glad it isn't just me then. It seemed like before Hurricane Francine things were getting really good. It has been trash since then. I have been lucky to catch a fish much less put five in the boat the last year and a half.

It’s not just you
Bass fishing has been tough everywhere in south Louisiana
Fish slow. Will be hard to do with a youngster but punching shite that a million other boats haven’t already throw a bait at is a good idea, especially once it gets hot.
Throw a frog or a moving bait early, once the suns out it gets really tough

Nope - Certainly not just you. It's a struggle right now. Most clubs are winning with 8 Lbs. and less right now. And the numbers aren't there either. A lot of areas that typically are strictly freshwater are full of redfish right now.

I'm fishing the same rodeo. And the scouting has been tough! Finding pretty water and good grass has been difficult. Whopper plopper and a senko been the ticket for me. It's going to be interesting to see what the Wednesday nite tournament out of amelia takes to win...but those boys will fish the ponds which the rodeo participants aren't supposed to do.

Fish grass or pads with a tilapia magic bronco bug or any soft plastic creature bait in tilapia magic or June bug and you’ll put some bass in the boat. Good luck.

Yeah, it has been very tough for me as well. I have a starting point though and it stays shaded most of the day. I am just going to put the trolling motor down and fish.

I know where I could go and more than likely smash them but like you said, not legal waters even though I doubt some follow that rule. (they usually don't) You can't really go off of the hawg fight tonight because you know where those fish will be caught.

I am expecting him to tap out by 10 AM. I have my brother lined up to come pick him up from me wherever I am fishing when he is ready to go. I am not going to make him tough it out all day when the head index is supposed to be 102 Saturday. Cleared this move with the tournament directors.

Hard enough to get a 5 bass limit much less worry about weight. Just make sure to fish clean. Been doing better with Ole humdinger lately than anything else.

Anyone know if the grass is coming back in the marsh in bayou black - particularly north and south of the blue bird? The last couple years, that entire area was void of any vegetation.

Fished Catouatchie a couple weeks ago and there is zero grass in the tank ponds. Worst I've seen it in years.

No grass in Lake Long and Lake Fields in Bourg either. Salt water has taken it's toll on the area.

There is more hydrilla than there has been in the last couple years but nothing like it use to be.

Buzz bait is my go to for early mornings this time of year. Usually if it doesn't happen for me by mid morning it isn't going to happen. I will be tickled pink if I get to weigh in five keepers Saturday.

Definitely use something to cover a lot of water.

White and chartreuse humdinger with a blue flake trailer for your son. You throw lunker lure, fluke until someone catches a couple then stick with that.

I have been using nothing but moving baits while i've been scouting unless I come across something I really want to flip then i'll pick up a senko or beaver and make a few casts.

He is limited to small baits because he is still fishing with a zebco, light rods. I have it set up with a 3.3" googan saucy swimmer on a 3/0 weighted owner with a colorado blade (weedless) and something else texas rigged. He still can't cast great so anything to help him from getting hung up is what he uses and yet somehow he still manages to end up 20' up a cypress tree. lol

I am just going to go fishing and not stress out about it. I have a hard time staying put and fishing one place. If i don't catch anything in the first hour I will bolt. I spend way too much time running around.

If FFS has shown us nothing it’s shown us there are fish over our shoulder and under the boat. I’d hav the youngster slow roll that swim bait wherever he wants to throw out away from what u fishing. Its works this time of year. Good Luck
