I say it was the head of Billie Joe's decapitated gay lover.

Been a long time since I saw that movie, but wasn't it the sheriff dressed up like a woman?

I don't remember either. Didn't it happen at a carnival?

If Southern Gothic was a musical genre, this song would define it. Delta blues at it's best.

It's interesting it knocked The Beatles "All You Need Is Love" out of the top spot in the summer of 1967. What a summer for music.

I think it was David Alan Cow's son Tyler, on his Cocaine and Rhinestones podcast that said if Bobby Gentry were an author and not a songwriter and had written both Ode to Billy Joe and Fancy as novels, she would be in the southern gothic pantheon right there with Faulkner.

A hottie and I loved her...
Delta Sweetie was an album that was phenomenal.. The strings and horn arraignments added so much.
Her usage of southern slang at the time is also very notable.
