Rick Derringer, whose six-decade career spanned teen stardom as lead singer of the ‘60s smash "Hang on Sloopy," a ‘70s solo hit with "Rock and Roll Hootchie Koo," session work with artists from Steely Dan to Barbra Streisand, and extensive work as a writer and producer of wrestling themes, including Hulk Hogan’s seemingly ageless “Real American,” has died, according to an announcement from his caretaker, Tony Wilson, and Guitar Player magazine. Wilson’s post states that Derringer died Monday evening in Ormond Beach, Fl. No cause of death was announced although Derringer had been in ill health in recent months; he was 77.

I really hate that song and it is played far too many times on the radio.

Had the pleasure of seeing live once at the Kingfish. The whole band didn't weigh 500 lbs. and they killed it!

Guy was a beast.
I posted a YT video previously of him with a double neck Guitar/bass playing both and singing during "Free Ride".

Derringer was a really good guitarist as well.
I saw him open for REO in like 1979 ...maybe 80.

Oddly he played on 2 Steely Dan songs. Show Biz Kids- slide guitar, Chain Lightning - guitar solo.
Legend has it Duane Allman saw him play slide in the late 60’s with the McCoys and helped inspire him to play slide.

Great guy...I played bass for Rick for a few live shows in 2011. He was living in Nashville at the time, as was I, and we met through mutual friends. I was a young bass player trying to grab any gig I could get. He was always kind to me.

I watched this a couple days ago randomly on YouTube.
Where are the multi- instrumentalists that can jam like that?
I didn't know he was a prolific producer as well.

Tough news. Thankfully was a believer, so he's all good.
Rick Derringer was unrated and underappreciated IMHO.
That Rock and Roll Hoochie-Koo performance on the Midnight Special by Rick and the band was one of the very best I ever saw on the show. Man, they were tight and really layin' it down!
