Wife and I are going to Glacier National Park for 4 days in late June. Never been, and we have not traveled extensively in the past. Looking for gear/attire recommendations for that time of year in the park. I have a pair of Oboz mid ankle hiking shoes that are broken in...should I get a pair of low ankle hiking shoes instead? Pants vs shorts? Thanks in advance for any feedback. We plan on hiking 3/4 days we are there. Any other gear that is a necessity?

shoes are fine
go to REI and look at some lightweight hiking pants like prana stretch zion, fjallraven abisko etc. you only need one or two pair and you’ll be happy you did. Many come in zip off legs if you want that. A similar long sleeve lightweight button up shirt is always a good hiking choice as well. Finally if you don’t have one, get a small day pack with a water bladder and hose so you can easily stay hydrated

have fun we will be there in august

Where are each of you staying? Had a trip planned to Glacier, Banff, and Jasper and then covid hit.

Have you been to Banff and Jasper? Just wondering if it’s comparable to Glacier NP.

Following!

We are going the 2nd week in July. Staying at Whitefish Ski Resort Sunday to Friday.

We were considering a day trip into Canada(never been) for a visit to a small town the Tuesday or Wednesday we are there.

Also planning a trip to Polebridge.

The last 3 summers we have been to Tetons, Zion and Rocky Mtn NP so looking forward to another NP under the belt!

Hope y'all have a great trip.

We went a few years back (June) and stayed in Hungry Horse for 7 nights in a cabin, first day we hiked Gunsight Pass trail from Lake McDonald Lodge to Sperry Chalet and got into knee deep snow just before Sprague Creek. We did not have snow shoes so we turned around and found a clear area for lunch, we headed back down after our break and headed back to the lodge for warm drinks. We did have zip off leg style like cgrand mentioned and recommended, I lightweight jacket that is waterproof as we got rain, sleet and snow on this hike (12 miles round trip), bears are coming out from hibernation so if you think bear spray will make you feel better then get some.
Polebridge is interesting as only solar power and relaxing, we picked up a hiker that had been on the trails for a month and heading there for mail and short stay at the hostel before taking off again.
Going to the Sun Road will probably still be closed just north of Lake McDonald lodge.
We did go to Watertoon Canada for the day.

Most brands only zip off at the knee without a side zipper down the leg. Which depending on your footwear you’ll have to remove them which can be very annoying.

REI brand Sahara pants has the best convertible pants on the market. They aren’t as sleek as Prana pants, which I love, but function is more important than form in this case.

Bowman Lake was such a cool experience.

Getting there is an adventure, hour to an hour and a half on unpaved forest service roads...feels like the middle of nowhere...I think we passed one truck headed the other way from us.

Polebridge was a cool little place. Two little shops, and two food choices. We rented a canoe from one of the shops there.

Leaving Polebridge to the lake was the bumpiest 40+ minute drive I have ever been on. Potholes that literally swallowed cars. We were in a Wrangler, and it was tossing us back and forth the entire way as we weaved around rough spots.

But, once you get up there, it is so quiet. We were the only canoe on the lake that day, so it was a cool experience. You could see some people hiking the trails, but it was very few when we went. A family of 6 spent about a half hour at the lakefront, other than that, we didn't really see anyone else.

You are remote...if possible bring protection from bears. Especially in June, that is cub season. And I am not talking about bear spray. We saw 3 bears on that trip in the park...some really far away, but at Bowman Lake, you are on your own. Also, the mesquitos and bugs are big enough to drag you away if they wanted!

However...we have some amazing memories and pictures from that day!

Wrangler ATGs are the same nylon/spandex blend that most of these brands are using and wranglers are 1/3 the price.
