Last week, I saw a baw with a second gen Cayenne rigged out as an overlander, and it caught my eye and sent me down a rabbit hole. Looks like they were very well engineered with few problems (outside the cost of routine maintenance), have a decent amount of power, great torque, and fairly sporty driving feel.
I am now debating buying one, specifically one with the diesel. You can find one with 80-90k on it for 25k, which seems very reasonable.
Any baws with experience or familiarity with them that would caution me against this impulse?

If you’re dead set on getting an overland type SUV I’d get an early 2000s Land Cruiser.
Edit: just saw your username I think you’ve talked about your Lexus land cruiser ha

Yep, already have an '01 LX 470. I was thinking this could be a better, funner daily and I could leave the behemoth for longer trips/harder roads.

Saw one this morning with a sticker that said “nice Jeep, peasant!”

Do you even 911 Dakar, baw?
It wouldn't be my first choice, bit if you buy any used Porschr, be sure maintenance hasn't been deferred.
Run the VIN @ a Porsche dealership.

That one is just a little bit beyond my budget.

That's beyond everyone's budget.
Porsche answerd a question nobody asked still made bank.

Not sure about the 958, think an issue with older Cayenne’s is wiring that crumbles/rots and leads to electrical issues. The V8 is good IIRC. I’d also look for a Touareg, though perhaps less of an aftermarket + the same potential maintenance headaches. V10 diesel Touareg over lander would be an incredible build.

I wouldn't say that.
Porsches have been winning offroad rallies for decades. You had Tuthill building some amazing road versions for customers. Then you had Matt Farrah do his Safari build and they entered the car zeitgeist. After that cane the Singer/Tuthill collabs. Finally, the 911 Dakar which, if anything, was late to the party but already had a built-in audience.
If I had had the fun money and the juice, I would definitely have grabbed one, not for the flip but to enjoy.
To the OP:
Transfer case is the biggest issue
As mentioned don't buy one that you can't verify maintenance was done on time. I call it second owner-itis. The first owner buys an expensive German car, keeps it for 4-5 years, and keeps up with the maintenance, partly because it is cheap during those years. A second owner comes along and stretches to buy his dream car, then when the expensive maintenance comes around, he puts it off because of something else going on in his life. Then the down hill run starts and maintenance turns into expensive repairs, and he unloads it. The biggest nightmares are the Porsche/Merc/BMW/Audi you got a deal on.

Carmella was such a bitch for that. Ginny had just lost everything and her husband Johnny was in the can.
