Will people ever learn to stop saying “that will never happen” when talking elite athletes

“Lebron will never win a ring”
“Phil will never win a major”
“Tiger will never win again”
“Rory will never win again”

Those are all in recent years. Has it always been this way or has social media made it more impossible for people to understand just how long forever is?

Cy Young pitched 749 complete games.

That will never happen again.

I never thought anyone would pass Sampras' 14 majors and three guys blew by that within 20 years. You would think those records are untouchable, but what if someone has a career of the Big Three, but isn't dividing those titles with another guy or two? Where would Nadal's 14 FOs have gone if he never existed? Fun to think about.

Will anyone get near Ovechkin in goals or Gretzky in total points?

He's hoping someone will take the bait so he can build a strawman and argue some arcane point for 15 pages.

It’s a very simple point

This site and society if full of “will never happen” in sports. It gets proven wrong over and over and yet people keep doing it. People are such prisoners of the moment

Has it always been this way or has social media and instant love in the now made it worse?

Can’t be right if you aren’t willing to put your neck out on the line.

When you’re wrong and someone does something cool like what Rory did yesterday, you acknowledge it and formulate your next take.

He’s already doing it barely halfway through the first page lol. His entire self worth is about thinking up self-perceived gotchas on the internet

So make a hot take, call people retards and “how does that cock taste” when they say it seems wrong, and then get mad and defensive when the athlete proves you wrong and people bring it up

That’s what it’s all about? That’s where we are at?

I mean, people who said Rory would never win another major were right for 11 years. I wouldn’t necessarily call that a hot take.

Sports would certainly be more interesting if everyone just said “X may win again or they may not.”

That’s fun

I get annoyed at people that try and act smart and declare an event already over way before it’s finished.

Yesterday in the group chat 3 of my buddies all said it’s over when Bryson doubled 11. I said guys there’s a lot of golf left.

Then again they said it was over when Rory was on 17 and I kindly reminded them that Rory could bogey 18 and then we would have a playoff.

Nobody said those things? We literally have someone defending one of those very takes he had in this thread
