Can great athletes become HOFer in their given sport, while not understanding that sport?

There’s a poster here who claimed the following:

You can be a genetic freak, be lazy and never really understand the game you’re playing yet still be HOF level in that sport.

Depends on what they mean by not understanding the sport, but generally no. If they mean something like NFL players not understanding ties are a thing or what the overtime rules are, then yes.

Brett Favre. Although his low level understanding of the sport is probably a bit overblown but him not knowing what a cover 2 defense in his rookie season is an example

It would be soooo hard not to understand something you play every day.

Depends on the position.

I doubt Adrian Peterson can read coverages.

There are probably a lot of DE who can’t tell you much about offenses or defenses past how to get past the OT in run and pass protection.

the question is can you be “lazy” and I dont really think you can.

You think Brett Favre didn’t understand football?

Chad Johnson didn’t even run routes most of the time.

Is there anyone else in the world that had the athletic ability of Chad Johnson? Or was he alone in the entire world with those abilities?

To an extent, yes.

How good would Shaq have been if he had Hakeem Olajuwon’s build?

How good would Giannis be if he wasn’t an athletic freak? He can’t shoot, he doesn’t do anything particularly well from a skill standpoint. He’s just supremely athletic and bullies his way to the basket over and over again.

HOF level is probably a pretty rare exception, but there are plenty of supremely athletic players who are lazy who make it to the league.

Not gonna play the goal post moving game. That game tends to never end.

The question was HOF not just playing professionally.

Maybe as good as Hakeem? Maybe better? Who knows.

So you think he doesn’t understand basktball?

The goalposts didn’t move. I’m asking for clarification and additional details on your answer.

You’re afraid to clarify an answer you gave to a question? Lol

I’m good, the rest of the thread is disproving you.

Ok. So he didn’t know the name of it?

There’s no possible way he didn’t understand the concept of what the defense was even if he didn’t know the name of it.

Not overall, no. He obviously learned a lot during his many years in the NFL but I’m saying he did make it to the NFL without a high level understanding of the sport.

His QB confirmed it. I love how you argue with factual evidence so much. Saves everybody the time of taking you seriously.

There’s a difference between a “high level” and understanding your sport
