Remember these?

Any of you or your families own all this shite?

quote:

In 1989, a complete set of the Encyclopedia Britannica typically cost anywhere from $1,000 to $3,000.

Also, seems like it would have been a dedication of money and space.

That's how we used to learn shite. If you couldn't find that answer in one of those volumes you just shrugged your shoulders and fricked off about your day.

If I got bored and couldn't play outside for whatever reason my grandmother would make me read the encyclopedia and tell her random facts and such.

Not that particular brand, but my mother made sure we had a set in the house. I actually perused them a pretty good bit as a kid.

I have an old maroon leather set of them. Their only use these days is that they look pretty on the shelf.

God I hated that smug kid.

My family had many sets going back to at least the 50s. I miss them.

We had an encyclopedia set, and it was used to settle debates in the same way we use google to settle them now.

Parents had a set of World Book when I was a kid, 80s. All the kids on the street would use them for school. It was our internet back then.

Since the set was technically my older brothers, I bought my own on EBay a few years ago. Having physical copies is important to me in these days where history can be revised.

(Looks just like these)

I have a complete 1957 World Book set... A prized possession. It is something else to read things like the Moon section before we even got there.

I pulled out A a few days ago and read about half of it... I love, love, love reading old encyclopedias.

Funk & Wagnalls

I remember a set that was sold at Delchamps in the early 1990’s. Not sure if it was Funk & Wagnalls or Funk & Williams.

Each week you had a new volume. The first one was cheap, but the rest was expensive to fill your collection.

I think I finally got rid of the set after Hurricane Ida got some of the books wet.

That's a name I haven't heard in a long while!

Grew up on the coast but moved in late 90s.

My mom was typically busy and didn’t have time for my incessant questions, so she would usually tell me to “look it up.” If we hadn’t owned those books, she really couldn’t have shut me up with that response. Probably worth the money from her point of view.
