When President Trump convened CEOs of some of the country’s top automakers for a call earlier this month, he issued a warning: They better not raise car prices because of tariffs.

quote:

Trump told the executives that the White House would look unfavorably on such a move, leaving some of them rattled and worried they would face punishment if they increased prices, people with knowledge of the call said. Instead, Trump said, they should be grateful for his elimination of what he called President Joe Biden’s electric-vehicle mandate, which involved subsidies and emissions requirements to encourage electric-car production. He made a lengthy pitch for how they would actually benefit from tariffs, two people on the call said, adding that he was bringing manufacturing back to the U.S. and was better for their industry than previous presidents.

Heres a way to lowers costs…eliminate dealerships. Straight to consumer with a set price.

Dealerships remain only to provide service

This is one of the reasons why populism sucks. Do we really want top-down pricing just to prop up a policy decision?

I made the post to show that CNN twisted the NBC News’ Kristen Welker piece. They flat out lied, and the TDS patients believe it.

Tesla does this and Elon has sued Louisiana because Louisiana doesn't allow this

Dealerships are literally protected by law in Louisiana which is insane and hurts consumers

I guess that partly explains why vehicles are more expensive here.

One addition.

And no, we don't.

Or I should say, anybody who does is very unwise. This is getting into the very territory that Trump's critics accused him of. This is dictatorial.

Hyperbole. What do you think will happen if they ignore his request?

Yep, and if you cross the Sabine to get the same vehicle in Texas because it's $5k less, you gonna get taxed on that savings if you want to register it in Louisiana.

With all due respect to the President (or any govt overlord), it is the prerogative of PRIVATE sector businesses to set Supply & Demand pricing of products & services.

It is not a good thing in a Democratic Constitutional Republic to fear govt interference, retribution or punishment.

Dealerships should only exist for repairs.

No.

This is Feral Overreach and frankly, authoritarianism plain and simple. Letting the independent business markets decide is the American, constitutional supply & demand way.

I don't think that's the definitive factor.

I thought it was dictatorial when the Biden administration vilified businesses for "greedy price gauging," and this is one step further than that.

Enacting some sort of recriminations is one step further than that, sure, but what he's doing is attempting to set them up for consumers to be angry at them instead of him when they have no choice but to raise prices in the face of these tariffs.

That's more than enough for me. It was when Biden did it and it's enough for me when Trump does it.

How many different ways from Sunday does the govt have for making business compliant to their whims, wishes, policies and agenda?

That isn’t very specific.

While I agree it does prove that CNN is dishonest in their report, I read your linked article a either yesterday or Friday, and couldn't help but think his statements to the U.S. automakers is very Biden/Obama-esq.

He's trying to use the bully pulpit to stop the market from responding to tariffs. If consumers aren't willing to make up the increase/difference, that message will be sent to automakers, and they'll respond.

Not unlike Biden getting all mad and chastising the O&G Industry when the price of gasoline (from oil) rose thanks to the combo of his policies attacking U.S. producers and Russia-Ukraine.

This guy gets it.

Why is anybody happy about Trump acting like Biden?

Why is anybody defending that?
