Hakkinen doesn't get enough credit when looking back at great F1 drivers. The guy was universally fast and an extremely clean driver.

Man I miss the early 2000s F1. V-10s, smaller cars all built differently, refueling, tire wars and Marlboro. Reliability issues and backup cars…etc.

I forgot how thin the driver lineup was in the late 90s. Hakkinen, Schumacher were top-tier drivers and Hill was pretty good but there was a whole lot of average behind them. Still, good times...and V10 engines.

Marlboro
Mika got his entrance into F1 from the Marlboro Driving Academy where Lotus picked him up.

Andrea de Cesaris had a long F1 career because his father handled Marlboro racing advertising in Italy. He decided where $5,000,000 million dollars of Marlboro money would be spent.

2026 F1 going back to smaller cars

A little smaller nothing like what we’d like to see.

That's true... Progress though first time they have gotten smaller in forever

Think we’ll ever see refueling again? It adds another variable in race/pit strategy

I never really understood why it was outlawed.
I remember Schumacher would do (seemingly) ridiculous 4 stop strategies and fly round to win, while everyone else was stuck doing 1 and 2 stops.

IIRC the argument was refueling led to more overtakes happening in the pits instead of on track. There's an overcut when you go longer on lighter fuel and the victim of the overcut can't respond. We traded the refueling overcut for the tire strategy undercut which can be responded to theoretically resulting in more overtakes on track. I dont know if pre and post 2010 overtake numbers support this or not.

No mistakes. Just wears you down. You get bored, frustrated, do something stupid, and he's got you.
