Silver Moon Cafe cookbook

Do y'all remember the Silver Moon Cafe near LSU on Chimes? "Mama" Seabell White Thomas, the owner and chef, is releasing a new cookbook.
Her original location was located off of Nicholson near Brightside. She later opened the location on Chimes Street before closing in 2007.
If you went to LSU in the late 80s to early 2000s you probably ate there for breakfast or lunch. Mama served huge heaping plates of smothered chicken, white beans and rice, fried chicken and pork chops, collard greens, cabbage, baked macaroni and cheese, spaghetti and other delicious soul food. All for $5.50 a plate back in the day.
Mama is working with some LSU graduates on the cookbook - check it out! https://silvermooncookbook.com

I hope they are actually able to fulfill orders this time. I want to buy it but am nervous that they won't actually deliver it.

I actually have the original cookbook.
It was humorous how bad it was from a recipe standpoint.
I'd love to hear from the OP if this one is going to be different.

“Bad” as in, hard to follow?

It seemed more like a book meant to celebrate Silver Moon. Which is fine. If Silver Moon opened tomorrow I’d be there.
But it wasn’t a cookbook. Recipes weren’t instructive and didn’t match the food served.

This happened to me. I paid for it on the website and I emailed them after a few weeks and they said they would ship it out and I never got it.

Good point. I know there were issues with shipping the first time around.
For Mama's new cookbook, we have several professionals and LSU graduates, including myself - an LSU journalism graduate, a graphic designer, food stylist and food photographer, book editors and a major publisher working on this new cookbook. Plus, I'm working closely with her daughter Sonyja.
We are testing each recipe multiple times for accuracy and rewriting for Mama. She'll be 82 this year and it's too much for her to manage alone.
The cookbook will be a hardcover with color photographs of each recipe, professionally printed and shipped directly to each customer.
Thanks!

Totally understand and I wasn't involved in the first edition. We've put a lot of measures in place to ensure the recipes and content are accurate and edited professionally.
For this new cookbook, there are several of us working on it, including myself (a journalist and writer and LSU graduate); a graphic designer, food stylist and food photographer, book editors and respected publisher. Mama's daughter Sonyja is also supervising and keeping everybody in line! lol

She gave me one of the first copies of her first version, I was still eating lunch at her at her home fairly regularly back then, either at her kitchen table, or garage apartment if there were a bunch of us. I’m told I’m a pretty good cook, but I struggle to create the kind of flavors she could crank out on that stove in her kitchen, or in her restaurants.
So happy she got some help making a better version, her work deserves to be memorialized. I’ll send you a note today to get a copy.

Order placed.
Let's hope this turns out better than the D1 Baseball subscriptions or Lobstahman.

We used to drink at the old one off Nicholson. Occasionally, shed run out of beer. She would give the one of us w fake ID cash to go buy beer at the circle K, then we'd but the same beer back from her at her prices. Worth it for the leftover food alone.
I'd love to find an old Budweiser "sultan of beers" mirror like she used to have.
I had her old campaign sign- I think she ran for the school board.

Just saw Mama Seabell, and she is doing well. Says to say hi to all her babies and she loves all of you. She's was out of circulation for two months due to cancer therapy, but is back among us and did a huge feed for a small group yesterday, 4-11-25. Her spirit has never faltered, and that voice can still cut like a knife. Making good progress on her cookbook, even as she faces another round of chemo soon...
