After seeing how people are so divided about the use of ffs on this site, I was curious to see the thoughts on the use of an A-rig for recreational fishing. I know many tournaments ban them because of how effective they are.

Do you throw one? If not, then why?

If so, what brand have you found is best? What swim baits do you like to use on them?

A lot of guys around here downright/troll Captain Mack's umbrella rigs for striped bass on Texoma. Mainly used to help find active fish.

Some guides throw A rigs but I personally don't.

I’m just not that mad at them. I grew up fishing shad lakes and have caught on them, but I find it to be a rare combo of both boring as frick and hard work to throw it all day. I bass fish to have fun, one good blowup on a buzzbait or frog is worth a 100 school fish hitting an umbrella.

A-rig never should have been banned professionally, their logic behind the ban is the exact thing going on with FFS but Lowrance, Garmin, and Humminbird are 8 figure sponsors to tournament trails so....

Disagree completely.

The A-rig is five seperate baits, each with a hook, which can target 5 seperate fish in a school.
It’s no different than allowing a single angler to cast out five different baits on five different rods at the same time.

If you can’t see the difference in that from a competitive point of view then I don’t know what to tell you.

And FTR I’m not a fan of FFS with regards to tournament fishing either.

Just my dos centavos

I don't know how anyone casts one for long...its damned hard work.

I troll them on flat lines, downriggers and planer boards and stripers and hyrbids can't resist them. At times they will actually out catch live bait...and are far easier to handle than live bait. It is pretty amazing there aren't more crappie sized A rigs being used...I catch some great big old slabs dragging a rigs for stripers. Also catch a buuuuunnnnnnccccccchhhhhhh of spotted bass (my home lake is getting over run with spots) and a lot of largemouth. I keep as many spots as the law allows.

I drag a rigs while live scoping for brush piles and interesting structure. Its the perfect way to fish and graph a sizeable segment of the lake....I do it because I like to catch fish instead of fishing. A lot of people seem to prefer fishing to catching fish. Each to his own but for me I like catching....

I’ve found they’re most effective in clearer water lakes for fish in deeper water columns. Mostly around marinas, humps, grass, etc.

It’s weird how some lakes are deadly with a swim bait and some are not even tho they set up the same. On a new clear lake, I start out with an underspin with a paddle tail type swim bait to get an idea if they’ll eat. If so, then it’s a-rig and nothing else.

I find they are most deadly during the shad spawn month. If they’re on it, it can’t be beat.

Drag 2 of them 50 yards behind the boat at about 3 MPH and cover the entire area around a marina which has hosted a tournament recently. If final weigh in is Sunday do it Monday or Tuesday. If it is Saturday do it Sunday. You are likely to catch about 2/3s of the fish weighed in during the tournament. The bigger the tournament and the better the fisherman the bigger the fish will be. Again, this is for folks who prefer catching fish to fishing....
