The only player I recall being this excited about before his first snap was Fournette. And I'm not sure even then I was as excited to see what we have.

The problem was never Corey Raymond to begin with. It's the position coach & secondary recruiter's responsibility to build the foundation of the relationship with a recruit. The HC is the seller of the program & deal seller.

As great of a recruiter Coach O was over the years at his other stops, he never held the responsibility of fielding & maintaining a complete team roster. Nor did he ever have the experience of maintaining & building off of a championship.

After 2019, the recruiting on the defensive side fell off a cliff. It was Coach O simply not knowing how to handle success. The Pelini hire was a shitshow. While O was concerned with chasing arse, he stopped selling the program & sealing the deal with defensive recruits. That's why the roster became so completely void of depth & talent defensively. It's the side of the ball where O's actions hurt the most.

Then to add on to that, Kelly came in afterwards & hired guys on the defensive staff who were not good recruiters at all. It compounded the issue that O left behind. This is the main reason for such subpar defense since the 2019 Championship. Thank goodness Kelly realized his mistakes & totally revamped the defensive staff. In return, defensive recruiting is back to what it once was.
