The two things that have always prevented me from taking the conspiracy theorists' side on this have remained with me to the present:
1. What tangible benefit would the Israeli government have to gain from attacking a powerful ally deliberately, an ally that was directly and indirectly assisting them in a conflict between three different Arab nations?
2. The Israelis immediately informed our embassy following the attack.
I just don't see why the Israelis would risk it all by deliberately attacking a U.S. vessel while in a war for their very existence. Just one day before the USS Liberty incident, IDF aircraft had inadvertently bombed one of their own armored columns in a case of mistaken identity.
