i hate them FWIW but 20-12 and 13-7 in the ACC for 4th or 5th place? Thats an NCAA tournament team without looking at any schedules metrics or whatever. The ACC is still a difficult conference. Personally i think they are way in but Lunardi may be bubbling them for the TV for ratings IDK.....Would be shocked if they were left out.

They have to win games in the ACC tourney for them to make it.

Preferably make it to the ACC Final (regardless the outcome).

Yes, they are in as a 7-10 seed in my eyes though.

Kentucky is the #6 seed in the SEC tournament. They have more top 25 wins than the entire ACC combined.

Let's just stack them against Ohio State, who I personally think is not a tournament team

OSU is 19-12 and 3-6 against Q1
UNC is 20-12 and 1-11 against Q1

OSU has played 9 total games against Q1 vs 12 for UNC, but OSU has 2 more wins.

UNC Net is 40
OSU Net is 37

LINK

So why is UNC absolutely in when OSU is not absolutely in today?

They're 1-11 vs quadrant 1. Not a Tournament team.

I posted this yesterday:

quote:

I think North Carolina slides in off their resume. They went 1-11 in Quad 1 games which sounds bad but if you look closer those losses were mostly competitive games @Kansas, Auburn (N), Mich St (N), Alabama, Florida (N), @Louisville, @Duke, @Clemson, Duke. 90% of tournament teams would have lost all of those games. And they took care of business against a watered down ACC with only one lapse at home v. Stanford. You can't punish them for scheduling a brutal non-conference slate.

But it's trendy and click-gathering to list one of the bluest blue bloods as the last team out so that's why the bracket experts have had them sitting there for weeks. Look for that to change on their final projections so they can continue to brag about getting 67 out of 68!!!! right again when anyone can correctly pick at least 65 teams based on automatic bids + top 40 NET + drawing 2 or 3 bubble teams out of a hat.

1 Q1 win
Wake Forest probably has a better resume & they’ll get left out

UNC is terrible. They have some talent but are horribly coached.

If they lose almost all of those games, why not?

I think power conference teams get too much credit for non-conference scheduling since the TV networks facilitate most of the preseason "classics", "invitationals", and "challenges" between them.

Meanwhile, they often won't pick up the phone if a good mid-major tries to play them. And then the mid-major gets punished by the committee in March.

That's a fair point. I should have worded my post to say the Committee won't punish them instead of can't punish them, regardless of the fairness argument. They know heavyweight battles in December benefit the sport and generate revenue, so they aren't going to discourage that.

Attended UNC for 2 years, still have connections in the athletic department and don’t think they’re in yet. I think they need to get to Friday (ACCT semis) to be part of March Madness.

This. I am a huge Carolina apologist, but even I can't agree that this team should be a in the tournament. They are a really bad Carolina team. If they are unable to generate iso dribble penetration to a basket, they are dead in the water. They are not a good three point shooting team. They may get hot for a short period, but it's shown throughout the year that it hasn't helped them win against quality teams.

I don’t think UNC belongs, but saying teams like OSU is better is wrong. It’s because of the quad system- a legit tough conference will have all the bottom/crappy teams be quad 1 just because they played a hard schedule. Big 10 is better than the ACC yes, but beating teams like Nebraska shouldn’t be rewarded with quad 1 wins.
