Penn was a phenom in his day, nicknamed the Prodigy. He's from a pretty prominent family in Hawaii and still lives there. I think he's now in his late 40s. People talk about Jon Jones and others that are made for MMA. Perhaps no one was as natural at it as BJ Penn. He might be THE guy to bring a lot of notoriety to the lower weight divisions in the UFC.

He was the first American and I think the first non-Brazilian to win Worlds in Jiu-Jitsu. It's rumored that he got his black belt in record time (from a legit school).

He has multiple titles in multiple sports, promotions, and weight classes. I don't remember the details but when the UFC was pretty young still, there was another promotion with a guy similar in size that was thought to be the pound for pound best. BJ Penn left the UFC to fight this guy and destroyed him.

After his retirement he seemed to struggle like many former pro athletes. Got into some trouble, seemed aimless. About 3 years ago he ran for governor in HI and to my knowledge, he seemed very sharp and balanced. He lost in the primary.

Now, things seem much worse. I don't know if it's CTE, or schizophrenia, drug use, or what. In the video below, the narrator talks about some stuff that's been happening with Penn, notably a recent situation where Penn is at his home and claiming his mom is not his mom, that she's some sort of imposter trying to steal the family's wealth, things like that. From the video it would appear Penn has been aggressive enough with his mom (who he thinks is an imposter) that she's threatened to get a restraining order on him. He has engaged in some pretty wild conspiratorial discussions, suggesting the CIA had a role in Max Holloway (also from HI) getting knocked out by Topuria.

I don't know what's going on with him but it's not good and these situations typically end in tragedy.

Probably like Mayhem, years and years of fighting and alcohol and drug use take their toll. The scary part would be it leading to him doing something really violent that in hindsight everybody saw coming.

Certainly a mixture of all of them. He was fun to watch back in the day. The twilight of his career probably brought him down his dark path though. Dem da breaks though with that line of work.

Getting punched in the head for a couple of decades and then getting obsessed with politics is a dangerous combo. Two things that turn people retarded

Ended his career in UFC with 7 straight losses & then multiple DUI’s and alcohol related incidents in HI since then.

Quite the downward spiral

I don't remember him ever taking much damage. BJ kinda had a notorious reputation since he didn't have to fight for money and came from a rich family.

In the video they stated a former girlfriend of his said he's been on drugs since the age of 14. They also mention a specific condition that causes someone to not recognize people they are close to. Someone, somewhere needs to have him examined somehow before this gets out of hand. I feel bad for the guy.

I really hope this isn't Tony Ferguson in 10 yrs. Dude already has demons, and taking all that punishment the last 4-5 yrs and refusing to retire cannot be a good thing.

If these guys made proper $$ for their work/draw, then these guys probably wouldn't hang on as long... But maybe not as well. Boxers do it too, and they make more.

Was in Hawaii this summer with the family for a month. Actually met him near Waimea while he was campaigning for the County Council seat. Was pleasant enough to talk to. However, you could tell he has a bit of a crazy streak in him. Would not want make him mad.

A crazy Hawaiian that’s been punched in the head for nearly 3 decades is gonna have a few screws loose.

Capgras syndrome is a pretty common dementia symptom.

All that blood he was licking off of his gloves after utterly destroying his opponents is taking a toll on the prodigy. Very sad .

He’s had some wars over the years—Frankie Edgar, Nick Diaz, GSP. 32 fights in the UFC alone. That’s more than enough to result in some serious CTE.

Guess Mayhem turned it around as he’s a co-host/staple of the Adam Carolla show now. Hopefully BJ can surround himself with the right people/support or this could spiral downward quickly

Glad I got to see him live at his best when he put a hole in Diego Sanchez's head.

Hope the dude gets some help.

One of many incredible moments for Penn.
