Does anyone know if you can get a roll up type of garage door for residential? A roll up is the type without the rails that go on the ceiling of the garage. It basically rolls straight up. They are used in commercial applications. I'm looking for something that fits in with the neighborhood and doesn't look commercial.

I did internet searches and didn't find anything. I even called a couple of garage door companies but they want to have a sales person come out. They couldn't answer any questions.

Just based on how they have to roll up, I'd think they would all look very commercial.

Have you considered doors that swing out?

Maybe you might can find a roll up that has a wood type finish or made out of wood? That would not look like a commercial style door.

These guys are in Houston (they manufacture what I think you are looking for). Maybe give them a call and see if they have any dealers in the area.

I guess if they get damaged, you can’t really repair like you can a standard garage? Not sure but something to think about.

If you just need to jack up your car higher, you can eliminate the center opener rail with a side mount anutomatic opener but the side rails will still be there.

You can have them raise the rails to about 6 inches off the ceiling as well. I have side mount openers and the rails are 6-10 inches from the ceiling. Ceilings are 11 1/12 ft , doors are 9 feet and it really opens things up having the doors go all the way up/

Good point. It’s beyond tacky how overhead door people will just install rails multiple feet from the ceiling and think everything is fine. They pull this crap in million dollar homes too.

I get that in million dollar homes but it is nice to have that storage up there if you need it.

I have no clue how economical this would be but airplane hangers have an exterior opening door that would provide a different look. I'm guessing they will cost what a conventional garage door costs X3 if you can even have it done.

That’s actually brilliant. I’ve only seen blocked off empty space. Maybe if they came with shelving up there, they wouldn’t be so hideous.

Depending on your location. I had one installed on my storage compartment in my house by American garage door in Covington.
