When I seen the ambulance driving slow away from Daytona, that told me all I needed to know.

I know it’s cliche to say this, but it really is hard to believe that was nearly a quarter century ago. Where did the time go ?

I remember for years a bunch of people saying he was a jackass. Then he died and everyone acts like he was some awesome dude.

On the track, sure he could be. But that's what made him endearing. His all-or-nothing style.

You're talking off the track. Never heard anything more than he wouldn't sign autographs at times, but actually being an a-hole, no. That was Rusty Wallace.

I remember right where I was, like when Elvis died.

We were coming back from a fishing trip in Louisiana and I had to drop a friend off at DFW Airport, we got back early so we stopped to have a beer and lunch.

The race was on and ending and it happened, we all set there gap mouthed.

Wait till how fast the next 25 years fly by and realize how old you’ll be.

I watched the race and saw the crash but turned to the nba all star game. They broke into coverage to say that Dale had died… he was the main reason I watched nascar.

My dad didn't actually cry, but I have heard many people say this line to me.

He didn't have to die. The HANS device had been invented over 10 years earlier, but pretty much every driver at the top levels declined to use it, citing discomfort, etc. But after Earnhardt died, IndyCar mandated it on ovals, and then soon after that on all tracks. IIRC, NASCAR and F1 took longer to make it a requirement.

Because he was such a huge figure in racing, Earnhardt's death sped up the adoption of the HANS device and no doubt saved lives. In the years before his death, numerous racers like Scott Brayton and Adam Petty died of basilar skull fracture. Maybe not all of them, but at least some of them would not have died if they had used the HANS device, which already existed when they died.

He died because he fricked with his seatbelt and wore an open faced helmet.

He had a laundry list of broken bones, including 8 ribs, an ankle, and his sternum.

He should have walked away from it.

And what Fatass Helton and the Earnhardt family did to Bill Simpson was shameful and inexcusable.
