The good, the bad, the ugly? - Opening Weekend

I'll be honest, there wasn't a whole lot of bad and nothing no the field looked ugly.
1. The good.
We have a pile of legit arms that are pitchers, not throwers. I knew we had some talent, I didn't realize how many of them were actual pitchers at this point. I'm sure most saw the stat line, it was something like a million strikeouts to damn near zero walks.
The bullpen impressed me the most and I think that's due to not being as familiar with those names. Evans, Mayers, Williams, Benge, Primeaux, Rizy, Fontenot, Schmidt, and Root all impressed.
What's wild to me is we didn't see Ware, Guidry, or Cowan this weekend. That should show you just how deep this pen will be.
2. The bad.
Uhh, I didn't see much bad this weekend. If i had to point to one item and I'll agree this is a stretch, it would be the offensive depth of the roster creating challenges down the road.
This a weird "bad" as this is truly a good problem to have. My concern is we have a ton of options and it will be a challenge to get viable options enough playing time to allow someone(s) to get comfortable.
It looks like Curiel and Stanfield are locks to start in LF and CF. We're trying to land on 2-3 players to fill a RF/DH role with what seems like 100 different options. Assuming Brown gets most of the run in RF, that narrows it down to a DH spot for a plethora of options.
This is a good "bad" problem to have.
3. The ugly.
I have a theory that LSU has a long term plan to do something different wiht the outfield at the box. The new bullpen under the RF bleachers was done on the cheap. Chain link fencing thrown around some turf and a wind screen wrapped around the area.
It's ugly, no better way to put it. The fact that we went this cheap makes me think there is a 3-5 year plan to upgrade the outfield bleachers and this was a band aid until a better option can be built.
To give credit where it is due, the white logos look 100% better.

I’d be shocked if Larson isn’t locked in at DH when SEC play comes around. Pearson being first off the bench due to versatility and he’s a clutch bat

The ugly is the huge freaking advertisement banner at the bottom of the stream

Agree on your points, was a good weekend of baseball and the pitching looks like it could be for real. Let's just hope wwe can stay healthy and th freshman improve each week.
The only bad I really saw was we had the runners in scoring position with no outs a few times and were not able to capitalize. I realize it is early so no judgement at this time, but we all know in SEC play you have to take the runs when you can.
All in all a good weekend. Could be a really good season.

I know this board loves calling Pearson "clutch", but he's a career .250+ batter. At one point last season, his batting average with RISP was under .200 (.180 I think). Jay called him clutch a couple of times and this board ran with it. Now it's hard to see Josh Pearson's name without someone putting "clutch" in the same sentence. Pearson is a true LSU guy so I'm not shitting on him. I just want the best 9 in the lineup and he isn't in that list. There is a lot of baseball to play and I'll be thrilled if he proves me wrong. But right now, I don't see how anyone could justify putting Brown or Larson on the bench for Pearson.

the ugly
On tv, it looks like the new seating down the lines were prefab bought from Amazon and just dropped in place.

It feels like Pearson has done well in the postseason maybe contributes to this

my seats are right by it. It is actually pretty nice. The bad part is the wait staff constantly running up and down the aisle delivering them food while we poor folk try to watch the game.

I think the main "bad" to take away from this is they are all left handed batters, minus Frey. It's not like Jay can mix and match them based on the pitching matchup.
I do think that Pearson should be the odd man out. He's a career .250 hitter averaging about 7 home runs per year and isn't a game changer in the field minus the WF catch (don't want to understate that catch). I guess he gets on base at a decent clip. He's been clutch a few times but I don't think it warrants him getting major playing time over some of the younger pieces like Larson and Brown.
I say all that to say I would be thrilled if he hits over .300 and double digit homers and is a major contributor to the team, he has just yet to show it.

It’s a simple fix I’m not really worried about but can be critical in close games. The base running needs to get better. They got thrown out a good bit. A couple of the throw outs to 2nd looked to be because of bad jumps.

One thing that stood out to me was our offensive approach across the board. Only 13 strikeouts and 30 BB/HBP through 3 games (albeit against pretty pedestrian pitching). With all the position battles, opening weekend jitters, and an opponent throwing just a tick above batting practice speed, no one was chasing or pressing. They all executed quality at-bats, didn't chase a bunch of junk, and didn't swing for downs every pitch.

Or LSU just doesnt have the money that peers have.

I used this example last year. When Tommy White would get a double in a key moment, we expected it and didn't think much of it. When Pearson would get a similar hit, people would call it clutch b/c we weren't expecting that hit from someone hitting sub-.250. Again, Pearson isn't bad, we just have better options at his positions.

While the jumps surely contributed, several of those you just had to tip your hat to the catcher. He was throwing lasers right at the front of the bag.

I think it's nice that you have a pitching coach in his second year, that's a first under Johnson since he's been at LSU and I realize you have a lot of new pitchers but nice to finally have some continuity

IMO: The ugly - baserunning. Last year, there were quite a few head scratching moments where our guys made dumb decisions. Felt like we saw multiple moments like that this past weekend.

The only "ugly" I saw was not getting the runner at home on that little league first and third play in the first inning yesterday. And that's a stretch to call that ugly.

only ugly was the lefty that did a decent job on Sat against LSU and leaving the bases loaded with no outs on Sunday
