Summer vacation July
Summer vacation we are from Louisiana. Trip is booked. Flying to Kansas City. Renting a minivan that we will convert into a sleeping van half the trip for Mom and 2 younger children. Tent for Dad and older son.
Leaving KC to Omaha then Badlands then Wall drug, Custer state Park, Mt. Rushmore, Windcave, then Sturgis, Deadwood, Theodore Roosevelt NP then Glendive, MT then Medicine Hat Canada then Banff, Waterton then Glacier NP then flathead lake, Emigrant, MT then Yellowstone, Grand Teton, Cheyenne, Wy then Lincoln, NE and back to Kansas City.
Doing this with family of 5. 13 boy, 8 boy, and 3 year old girl. Staying in hotels and some tent/van camping. Staying at Cedar Pass lodge, Custer State Park cabins, Two Jack Main Campground, Rising Motor Inn, Yellowstone (Canyon campground, Old Faithful Snowlodge cabins, Grant Campground). Mostly hotels in between these NP stays.
Any stops we should make or not make. Plan on visiting Frontier Days while in Cheyenne.
We have taken the boys on many cross country trips similar to this. They love it. We enjoy moderate hiking, fishing, white water rafting and any other neat adventures. Huge baseball fans and will see Royals play. Stop in Omaha (we have been to college World Series).

Went to Banff in September. Would recommend driving up icefield parkway at least to Bow lake, multiple hiking stops and great views, kids would enjoy canoeing at Lake Louise and or Emerald lake. Emerald a bit off the main roads but much less crowded. Could spend an entire day at Lake Minnewanka that is very close to downtown Banff, boat rentals, hiking, wildlife there. It’s the biggest lake in the area but not as pretty as the smaller lakes up the mountains.

Only thing I can add is to visit the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in KC. It’s not a large museum so you can probably do it in about an hour. But it has an amazing amount of memorabilia to see.

Rapid City and Yellowstone road trip 2019
This is a link to a TD trip report for part of your route we did in 2019.
Banff, GNP and other places trip reports. This is a Banff & Glacier NP (plus Vancouver) trip report.
Get the National Park Service app if you don’t have it. It’s the one that looks like an arrowhead with a white buffalo, tree (sequoia I think), and a mountain on it. It has all the sites managed by the NPS, not just the NP.
Teddy Roosevelt NP is a “poor man’s Badlsnds” NP IMO. It has a north & south area that are about an hour apart. Both areas are in and out the same entrance. Medora looks like a cool town but we were there in Oct and it had closed for the season. There is the ND Rodeo Hall of Fame there.
Stop by the TR NP visitor center. They like to talk about prairie dogs.
North of the northern area is Fort Union Trading Post. Kids might like that. The NP app has many historical places similar to that all over the west.

Actually went to KC, Iowa and Nebraska in May, then the Dakotas over Father's Day weekend, so I have a few suggestions.
In Kansas City, HIGHLY recommend the WWI museum, and when you go there you can pass by the Scout statue overlooking the city:
And of course get some KC barbecue, either at Arthur Bryant's or Joe's.
If they are in town, go see a Royals game at Kauffmann. Beautiful ballpark:
Before you cross into Omaha, the Union Pacific Railroad museum in Council Bluffs is free and a pretty cool visit for about an hour, especially if you are into trains.
In Omaha, make sure to stop by the NPS' Lewis and Clark Landing along the banks of the Missouri River, and then go out on the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge; there's a spot in the middle marked where you can be in Nebraska and Iowa at the same time:
Make sure to try a Runza while in Nebraska. Good lunch stop for the family. Also pass by the cool art deco state capital building in Lincoln (only state with a unicameral legislature):
Looks like you have all the same stuff covered in the Dakotas that we hit, except for the NPS Minuteman Missile NHS facilities near Wall and the Badlands along I-80. There is a missile silo and the launch center, good for two quick educational stops.
In Rapid City, Dakotah Steakhouse was pretty good. Also drive downtown and note the statues of ALL the presidents on street corners:

My family took a similar trip about 5 years ago. Had a great time. The only place I can think of that you didn't mention is Devil's tower. You should be passing fairly close to there. Not necessarily a must see but it is interesting.
