I'm creating a menu that starts with tuesday and goes for 12 days. The last time I tried the atkins diet, I puked my guts up for three days and finally quit. So I'm trying it again with maybe a soft drink thrown in every now and then (that would stop the nausea). It's really hard to come up with a menu that is low carb. So far I have the following. What can I add that is good and not expensive? I also need some "on the run" snacks since I have basketball pretty late.

Tues: Breakfast: 2 turkey hot dog weenies
Lunch: Salad
Dinner: Grilled Chicken with salad
Wednes: Breakfast: Mini-quiche
Lunch: Salad
Dinner: Tacos (Taco Salad)
Thurs: Breakfast: Spinach Omelet
Lunch: Salad
Dinner: Pork Chops

Most are LOADED with carbs.

I would stick to water and crystal light.

Be sure you limit your sodium intake as well, that will really help the process.

because it's pretty unhealthy. you're cutting your carbs so low that it's actually at an unhealthy low. it's basically saying, "hey, eat all the bacon, steak, and chicken you want, just don't eat anything that has to do with carbs and you'll be ok." Not a good thing if done for longer than a week...two at the most. you're depriving your body of essential nutrients that it needs to function.

Don't do the Atkins diet. It is very hard on you kidneys and basically most the weight you lose is actually muscle and therefore your caloric burn on average per day goes down. This causes you to gain fat with fewer calories in the long run. It is very simple calories in vs. calories out. If you want to eat more then workout and gain some muscle (not like huge or anything) which will increase the amount of calories you burn in a day.

You really should study up on the atkins web site. If you don't eat the right stuff, it wont work and you'll gain weight. Also frick a turkey hot dog. That's the best part of Atkins is eating the fatty meats and cheeses. Just about all you can handle. Also no fruit the 1st few weeks. If you do it right the weight will start to fall off of you around 2-3 weeks in to it. Good Luck.

Probably because unless you make it a lifetime eating habit change and not just a "diet" you'll gain all the weight back and then some.

Plus alot of people say it's not the "healthy" weigh to lose weight and maintain it throughout the rest of your life.

Exactly, eat 5 or 6 small meals a day. It'll speed up your metabolism therefore burning more fat, instead of muscle, when you get into the gym.

if she has a 12 day target, i think we can assume this is just a jump start

There's nothing wrong or unsafe about the diet. In fact I read recently when compared to low-fat, or South Beach diet, Atkins was the best for losing weight, lowering bad cholesteral and raising good cholesteral.

Being in shape is not some fad diet it is a lifestyle. Think about this...if you are trying to lose say 20 pounds, did you wake this morning and you were 20 pounds heavier? It took months if not years to gain that weight, and it is gonna take months maybe a year to get it off.

well it depends on what you do with atkins

eating a pound of bacon and thinking it's healthy is just retarded

Unless you eat a lot of sandwiches, pasta, or breaded/fried foods, I don't see how it can be that hard.

You can use vegetables like carrots or zucchini and julienne them to take the place of pastas. Most vegetables are pretty bland enough to serve as a blank canvas like pasta does. Or if you don't want to go through that trouble, they sell low carb pastas and even tofu pasta as well.

Grilling most of your meats will help you use less salt because of the flavor that the grill imparts.

Use a lot of full flavor sauces or salsas to help make things taste good. I find that things like rosted corn salsas or pico, or anything that has a citrus and fresh tasting herbs like cilantro really help make things taste better when doing something like this.

"Low-carbohydrate diets for weight management are far from healthy, given their association with ketosis, constipation or diarrhoea, halitosis, headache, and general fatigue to name a few side effects." High intakes of fat and protein raise cholesterol levels and the risk of cardiovascular disease, prompting criticism from a variety of health bodies.

The American Dietetic Association described Atkins as "a nightmare of a diet", while the American Medical Association's chairman called it "a serious threat to health" in testimony to the US Congress.
