Forbes: USAID responsible for NAFO Troll Farms

Ivan Volkov post in the OT Thread
USAID’s Digital Warfare Against Dissenters
According to Forbes Ukraine, USAID was the primary financial backer of Ukraine’s Ministry of Digital Transformation (MDT)—a government agency overseeing cyber operations and information warfare. The funding was supposed to support Ukraine’s digital infrastructure and propaganda war against Russia. But there’s another side to this funding......
This same ministry has direct ties to doxxing, harassment, and censorship operations against critics of the Ukrainian government—including U.S. citizens.
Ivan Volkov
One of the key figures in this scandal is Ivan Volkov, a Senior Project Leader at Ukraine’s Ministry of Digital Transformation. Volkov isn’t just some bureaucrat—he’s the founder of the “Digital Forces of Ukraine” Discord group, a hub where NAFO trolls organized mass-reporting campaigns, online harassment, and doxxing of independent journalists and analysts.
For years, people have asked: who funds NAFO’s targeted campaigns? Who organizes these waves of censorship and threats against dissenting voices?
We knew the answer, now we have the admission: the U.S. government itself—through USAID—was financially supporting a Ukrainian government operation that engaged in censorship, intimidation, and doxxing.
And American citizens are one of the primary targets.
In the spring of 2023, a Ukrainian group calling itself the Unintelligence Agency doxxed every single member of DD Geopolitics, revealing our personal information and putting us in incredible mortal danger.
This was not an organic attack—it was part of a coordinated effort funded by U.S. taxpayer money."

I mean, its good that its being published and all. We certainly dont need to pay for it.
But in times of war, propaganda itself is expected. Whats not, is your sugar daddy paying for it through a gov dept that paints itself as the last source of rice for starving kids in Africa.

Doxing and harassing domestic reporters is not what healthy democracies do.

I don't know about y'all but it's always a super idea for taxpayers to fund foreign governments to personally attack the taxpayers.

Lee Fang has this.

USAID Funded Censorship, Smears of Americans
quote:
USAID has funded the Zinc Network, an anti-disinformation group that has targeted reporter Max Blumenthal, politician Vivek Ramaswamy, and Rep. Andy Biggs, R-Ariz.
USAID also funded a pesticide industry public relations effort known as v-Fluence, which dug up dirt about American food journalists Michael Pollan and Mark Bittman.
But most troubling, the foreign assistance agency has financed a network of groups in Ukraine that have spread unsubstantiated claims that American voices in favor of peace negotiations with Russia are agents of the Kremlin.
American government entities face restrictions on spreading such propaganda against domestic targets. The foreign nexus of USAID provides a convenient loophole. American grants and contracts flow, often through third-party intermediaries, to a network of foreign recipients, which can push to silence American journalists and politicians through outside advocacy.
In Ukraine, USAID, through its contractor Internews, supports a network of social media-focused news outlets, including New Voice of Ukraine, VoxUkraine, Detector Media, and the Institute of Mass Information. These news outlets have produced a series of videos and reports targeting economist Jeffrey Sachs, commentator Tucker Carlson, journalist Glenn Greenwald, and Professor John Mearsheimer as figures within a controlled “network of Russian propaganda.”
The influence of these outlets extends far beyond the borders of Ukraine. VoxUkraine, for instance, is an official fact-checking partner to Meta and helps the social media giant censor so-called disinformation. Detector Media similarly produces English-language disinformation reports widely circulated through western media.
Despite branding as independent outlets, these organizations are heavily reliant on USAID.
USAID, contract documents show, provides special grants to Detector Media to "undermine Kremlin information operations" and "bolster international support for solidarity with Ukraine." In 2021, Detector Media received 35.1% of its nearly $1 million budget from USAID contractor Internews. In 2023, USAID provided a $2.5 million direct grant to Detector Media.

Which of our Ukraine dorks posting here are paid shills from this entity?
Posted on 2/4/25 at 2:51 pm to tide06
Sure. But you’d probably be surprised to find out the Allies were exerting similar levels of control over media publications of the time.
Generally they were all a bit more compliant due to circumstances.
I agree in aspiring for higher standards, but ethics tends to take a hike when people are in War. Thats just reality.

You could hit 10 of them by swinging a cat on the OT thread

Abe Lincoln locked up reporters without trial during the civil war.
He was a tyrant who deprived American citizens from their rights and denied the southern states their right to secede as was originally agreed upon when they agreed to join the Union.
I’m saying the north wasn’t a healthy democratic republic during the civil war and we aren’t either if the government is using cutouts to silence dissent when we aren’t even at war formally.
