4 part doc series on peacock
Largely pretty meh…ep 1 is ok but probably more focused on newer cast members more than I expected
The cowbell one was ok
The writers episode was bad but gives you a glimpse of why the show sucks now though
The weird season episode on season 11 was actually good.

I enjoyed it though the subject matter was pretty random. Would have preferred they focus on Season 12 rather than Season 11 (or maybe combine them?). For tumultuous seasons, really would have loved a look at Season 20 (year after Hartman leaves; Mike Myers is gone midway through; Chris Elliot, Mark McKinney and Garafalo join cast, Michael McKean is still there). That's widely regarded as one of the worst, but I absolutely love that season.
Highlight of Season 20
Agree with you on the writers episode. It at least makes sense why I don't find most of the show funny anymore, my comedic tastes are definitely not consistent with that of their writers.

quote:They have to have had to focus on the worst current writers. I don't see those two younger writers having anything to do with the Bargatze or Chalemet episodes that knocked it out of the park. Those two kids were the unfunniest people I've seen in a while.

And yeah, the writers episode was the worst of the four by far. They should've focused on the older, retired writers. If you're going to feature current writers, go to the Do Not Destroy kids.

I get maybe they wanted to show how the process goes on show week but man the gay guy, Asian lesbian playwright, large black chick with glasses, etc didn’t seem remotely funny.
Surprised it was only 4 episodes given what they chose to focus on, I figured there were more coming.
Lorne does seem pretty protective of behind the scenes stuff so maybe they were hamstrung as far as telling the stories people want to hear

I started the first episode with the auditions, which was pretty cool. Now I'm curious to see the writers' episode, after what yall have said. The writing has been so awful the past 10 years. The cast has not been amazing, but there has also been plenty of talent from some of the cast to carry the show. These cast members could hold their own in most of the good casts of SNL:
- Keenan (obviously)
- Mikey Day
- Alex Moffat
- Heidi Gardner
- James Austin Johnson
- Marcello Hernandez
- Michael Longfellow
- Ashley Padilla
- Emil Wakim
With good writing, the show could be very good with the above cast members.

It had so much more potential. But yeah, even Tina Fey was shitting on the current crop of writers.

First episode was par. It's going to usually skew to younger cast members, but them not getting any of the originals was kind of crazy. Really enjoyed the 4th one about Season 11. I definitely want to go back and watch the Coppola episode again. Forgot how great it was. Man, George Wendt looked horrible in his interview.
I'm really enjoying this series about the history of SNL, at least the cast members and sketches: LINK
It's helped me remember a lot of the top tier stuff from the first half of the show's run.

Really? She is horrendous most of the time and overacts. What is one good sketch that she plays a big role in?

She's great at the weird stuff:

I like Andrew Dismukes. He brings a nice psychotic energy at times. In this sketch in particular:

I actually meant to include him. He reminds me a lot of Chris Parnell. He's perfect for the show.

The Do Not Destroy kids are like the new Lonley Island.

The writers episode was good in that it was interesting to see the dynamics of a week-til-air and how that creative process works.
But my god did they just confirm every stereotype and negative accusation about why the show sucks so bad now. First episode didn’t really help, either; “we just kinda picked people on a seemingly arbitrary rubric and if we liked someone but not enough the. We just made them a writer”. Like, maybe help me understand why you picked the NYU playwright or the random poet to produce sketches for this tentpole late night program? Or maybe don’t explain away your hiring process as arbitrary and give some deeper insight (like when they said “we would sometimes see someone really good but may pass because it would be a redundant skill set to someone already in the show.” That’s actually useful info. Also, please god share that feedback with the poor SOBs you put through the interview process)

Enjoying the music episode. Cool to see Eddie Murphy get involved

Enjoyed the first two episodes but felt like they left out a ton of Farley/Sandler content

Last night there was an SNL 50 2 hour special on the musical guests. It was really cool, and there were several things I didn't remember happening- Kanye wigging out over stage decoration and almost not performing, Morgan Wallen getting cancelled after partying unmasked during COVID, Deborah Harry basically introducing the public to Rap/Hip Hop by showcasing The Funky Four + 1.
Lot of groundbreaking early on for SNL.

Just started this one, the mash up intro is good shite

The gay Asian dude overreacting to his audition tape that was like 4 years ago also annoyed me
The ones 20+ years ago seeing there’s made sense but he was trying too hard
