Avocado trees in south Louisiana

I’ve got an avocado that I planted 5-6 years ago. I’ts survived the last couple of freezes, but it had pretty good damage each winter despite using the frost cloth.
Any advice? Has anyone used a beach tent to create a temporary green house-like structure?

I do the following:
-buy a pipe tape warmer off amazon for $20. If you can’t get one in time C7/C9 incandescent Christmas lights will also work.
-put your heat source on your trees
-next wrap in breathable frost blanket
-this elevates temp inside the blanket 5-15 degrees depending on what you use
The citrus guys in FL just spray water on the tree and let it freeze.

You can do an extension cord to something like an old incandescent Xmas light strand as said or to something like a shop light lamp or just regular lamp with a halogen bulb

So wrap the pipe warmer directly onto the tree(7ft) and run any extra through the branches like Christmas lights, then wrap w the cloth?

Exactly.
The idea is that the warmer generates heat and the frost blanket creates a barrier that keeps ice off and traps the heat in.
For palms you want the heat on the top of the trunk where the branches pop out, for citrus and fruit you need to protect any area with buds meaning the branches are more important than with the palms.
But the pipe warmer is a cheat code. Those things heat up to like 70 degrees and have a thermometer attached so they turn on and off automatically. I have one for each of my cold sensitive palms and plan to get them for my citrus as they age out from being transportable in pots.

What if your palms are large...like 30' tall? Would wrapping the bottom help at all or is that just a waste of time?

I mean unless you can get to the top of the trunk where the fronds meet the trunk there isn’t anything you can do.
What kind of palm are they? Pindo, windmill and Sabal should be fine.

Honestly, not sure yet. I bought this house earlier this week...just in time to deal with this artic blast! I'm not at that house right now, but from what I remember, it looks like some sort of date palm? It has the long fronds, not the ones shaped like fans (mexican palms, palmetto, etc.).

you need to protect only the very top of the palm not the trunk

Do you get good production from this? I want to grow one

None so far. It flowers late Jan/ early Feb so I’ve lost all flowers in prior freezers
I’m told you need an A and B type to maximize production
Sounds like the bacon variety is more cold hardy than the Hoss
