Anyone follow hockey?

If so, how did you get into it, etc.? I love attending NHL games when I have the chance, but I cannot seem to follow it on a regular basis.

I go to Kings games on a pretty regular basis only because the Staples Center is down the street and tickets are only $10 for college students. I enjoy it, but I can never really get into hockey fully because I hate watching it on TV

Huge fan. Got into it in the 1980s by rooting for the Flames to beat in Wayne Gretzky's head. I actually kind of like that the game is under the radar, as the quality of play has never been better in my lifetime and there's a very low number of idiot commentators on the sport. Actually, there's tons of smart hockey blogs out there and since ESPN clearly doesn't give a damn about the NHL, Bucci is allowed to say whatever he wants and his column is now a must read.
I think its a better TV sport than people give it credit for, it's only bad for TV because it doesn't lend itself to commercials becuase the action is fairly nonstop. TV execs have a vested interest in all of us repeating the line that hockey is no good on TV. But because of that, NHL has great attendence numbers.

I watched the Habs vs. Bruins last night on VS in HD, and it looked damned good on TV.

Go to an NHL game. In my opinion it is the best PRO sport live. I love watching it on tv as well. If you want to get into watching it on tv, start watching when the playoffs roll around. It'll definitely keep you entertained.

Moving to Denver finally gave me a team to rout for. Growing up in BR its kinda hard to choose a team. I got to sit on the front row last year and it was amazing. Most of the games are run locally in HD!

I'll put it like this: the NHL is far better on TV than the NFL is live. Holy crap, is going to an NFL game the most unpleasant sport expereince possible or what?

I went to Broncos v Saints this year. Horribly overrated. They make noise at Invesco but stomping on the floor, lame....

Started watching the Kings when they got Gretzky. I had just moved to Southern cali and watched just because I'd heard so much about Gretzky. The Kings had some good playoff runs but could never get by Patrick Roy and the Redwings. Now, about this time of year is when I start paying attention to the Stars.

I watched it alot in the 80's during the Oilers run, when ESPN had National Hockey night. Played as a young adult, got back into it when the Icegators came to town, which got me playing again, and watching the NHL again. I haven't watched too much since the strike. But I would consider myself a fan, despite the horrible coverage that versus provides.

Big Rangers fan. I have gone to one or two games a month for the past 10 years. I think the deal with hockey is this:
- great sport live
- television coverage is either fantastic or horrific depending on who is carrying the game. In the NY area, for some reason the picture / broadcast for the Devils is head and shoulders above the Rangers - games played at the Islanders are unwatchable. I think for the rest of the country LA, Dallas, and Detroit always seem to put on a good broadcast.

I was too young to really follow it when the Flames moved from Atlanta to Calgary. My first game in person was an exhibition game between the Bruins and Flyers in 1989 - the first time a hockey game had been played here since the Flames left. It was wild, I was hooked.
Went to some IHL games when the Knights were here, and then was at the first Thrasher exhibition against the Rangers and went to a few games a year. Only problem with NHL is that tix are so darn expensive. Now there is an ECHL team out in the 'burbs and I go to a few games up there each year, much cheaper and can get much better seats.

I used to live in Florida and this was when the Lightening won the Stanley Cup. The St. Petersburg Times didn't even have the story the following day. Can you believe that?
Even some sports reporters can't get into it apparently. But hockey fans are very loyal. The ones who are out there, at least...

I got attached to hockey watching the Air Force Academy and Colorado College in the early '70s.
Saw a few games of the old Colorado Rockies in the late 70s when Don "Grapes" Cherry was the coach.
Once you understand the fundementals and concepts of the game it's not that difficult to watch on TV.

Fun numbers concerning attendence of the NBA and the NHL. The long and short of it is this: the NBA has slightly higher attendence right now, but the NHL is trending upwards, has more arenas at 90% capacity and fewer teams playing to less than 80% capacity.
I'm not sure if this means hockey fans are more hardcore, but the sheer fact we have numbers as good if not better than the NBA despite almost zero marketing and no presence on ESPN except when something goes poorly does say something good about hockey fans' loyalty.

quote:To me, understanding the game has made all the difference. I started going to Stars games the first year they moved to Dallas. But it wasn't until 1996 that I learned the game when I went with a guy from work who was from Canada. I got so into it that I went to almost everyone of the home playoff games the year the Stars won the cup. IMO, to get into watching it on TV, you've got to understand the game first, then start with an exciting one. I often switch a game on (with any teams) when I find out there's one in overtime. That's exciting.

When i was younger, i used idolize Pavel Bure who played with the Canucks. My family were Flyers fans. I was giving the adopted son treatment for some time. Anyway, i started playing roller hockey with some friends and been watching and playing since. This sport is really underrated and takes alot of skill to play. You'd be surprised how fun this game is when you actually are playing.

Used to watch the Colorado Avalanche when they actually had it on TV.
After the strike, I sorta gave up watching it.

Last hockey game I watched was the Miracle on Ice. Kinda ruined me for anything else.
