Seems odd that we only offer him a greyshirt. Maybe the coaches know something...

The coaches know we have 22 commits and spots are limited.

If he's qualified, why would he take a grey shirt? Isn't that for people that aren't qualified?

According to Scout, Tahj has offers from LSU, Ole Miss, Arkansas, Minnesota, and TAMU

offer lists on rivals and scout don't mean much. a recruit can put whatever they want on that.

these are the only significant ones. Speaking of Tahj. I saw him last night and if he is going to play LB in the SEC, he needs a greyshirt, and then another redshirt season to get up to 220. He is lucky to weight 185. He's pretty cut and all but no way he's 200 lbs.

How does a grey shirt differ from a preferred walk-on?
Posted on 1/14/09 at 1:28 pm to 12inches
is it really 12 inches?
lucky you.

The way I understand it is a grey shirt assures you of a scholly the next year....whereas a preferred walk-on is very rarely given a scholly. Just depends on how well they do.

That was the original intent. Now it is used for making the numbers work, especially on in-state kids that can afford the tuition outright or can use Tops to attend college or community college for a semester.
Our cheap tuition and Tops gives us many advantages. I think it's one of the reasons why our baseball team has flourished.

Greyshirt can be a couple of different things. But in the case of TJones, it would likely be that he'd enroll in the fall, walk-on, and then get a scholarship in January, 2010. He could not play in 2009 even as a walk-on, but could practice. Considering his academics, and his need to bulk up some, this would be the best option for him. I know some kids feel a chip on their shoulder for not getting a full scholly offer, but TJones and others (possibly Josh Johns) should know that regardless of where you go, the ultimate is performance and playing time. You can lose a scholly as easily as one is offered (see R. Perilloux).
