My wife's grandmother owns a small tax company and has always done our taxes. We have owing between $1,000 and $3,000 every year for the past several years.

I caught an error this last year and instead of owing around $2,400, we got back $718.

Can anyone recommend a tax accountant who is known for helping minimize money owed/?

...or even better, how to get money back?

John Martin and Associates in the Energy Corridor did ours for years. Be aware they're probably not touching anything but this year's filing (which you should be able to do yourself with TaxCut or similar) until May.

Why would they not offer to go through my past 10 years of filings and see if I should be getting money back?

Because they won't have time until after April 15th. They'll probably do it, but it's more critical to get everyone else's out for this tax year. They're already working ludicrous hours probably starting in the next two weeks, and it won't stop until tax filing day (busy season.) Then it's likely their burnt out husks will take some vacation to recover, and then they'll get to your stuff from 2014, lol.

There is no point in looking before 2021. You can’t get refunds from before that.

1. Busiest time of the year. People already have too many clients

2. You can only go back and get refunds in the last 3 years

I’m curious what the error was?

Also did you switch jobs or update tour w4 or did your business not do as well as it did in years passed? Have a kid?
May not be the firm could just be situational.

Totally understand wanting to make sure the figures are correct and it always seems better to get money back. But there’s plenty of reasons why you got money back this year instead of owing.

Small firms are cheaper, but you can only get refunds from the last 3 years so you’ll may spend $8k to get $10k back, fyi. Depends on how easy they are to correct.
