Why does the Mississippi University for Women have male students/athletics programs?

Went down the rabbit hole a bit after somehow, I got a Mississippi Valley State X post pop up in my feed after their LSU basketball game score. The post was "Final Score: Thank God it's over."

So, I checked their ESPN page and saw they are 2-11 and one of their wins was against Mississippi University for Women. Curious, I then went to their web page.

What the hell? I get it that for a male it is likely a free ride, but isn't that a bit embarrassing?

Sounds like a great time. I should've gone there for 4 years

It’s a college degree. Do male cheerleaders and nurses embarrass you as well?

I don't think you understand.

I'll put it this way. Would you proudly go around parading your Mississippi University for Women degree as a male professional?

Used to be an all girls school then started accepting men due to financial woes. For some reason they have athletics, an old high school classmate was their head women’s basketball coach at one time.

It’s in my hometown and the campus is in a dumpy part of town, tiny school with very little money. They should have pushed for State to acquire them years ago but that’s no longer in our best interest.

I thought MUW was in the process of changing its name... for this very reason in part

Guess it hadn't gone through yet

There is no nice part of Columbus. Hence, Caledonia and New Hope are now larger schools than Columbus. When we moved to Columbus in 1991 as Lee and Caldwell merged due to integration issues, it was the largest public school in the state. Columbus has failed through terrible leadership for 40 years. The MUW has failed and should have accepted MSU's bid to buy them out. Their population has dwindled. They have some amazing facilities but no students to teach. Columbus is a failed city and misplaced Delta town.

You are correct. I’m from Columbus as well. Only a couple good neighborhoods in Columbus proper.

Sad, because the downtown has potential to be a nice small town and there are so many beautiful antebellum homes in town.

I graduated from State and have some older friends who always say Columbus was the fun town for them. Oktibeha was a dry county so going to Columbus was regular. There are still nice pockets, but it's not a place to raise a family. My sister is trying but is married to old money and can go the Heritage route and avoid it. Columbus city schools are gone forever.
