Headed to west Texas in late January for a guided sandhill crane hunt. Any tips/recommendations?

Assuming you are going with a guide. Pick out one bird and shoot it all the way to the ground.

Don’t pick up a wounded bird. They will wreck you

If hunting cranes exclusively; break out the lead. Legal for cranes.

My only “tip” from the few times I’ve done it, is hunt where the birds want to be. And I mean right where they want to be. Obviously easier said than done, but those sob’s are stubborn and won’t just go to decoys if it’s not where they want to be.

Use lead.

Hope you’re where they want to be, if they start piling into the other side of the field, just bend over and grab your ankles because there’s nothing you can do to pull them. It’s one of the most fun birds to hunt, but also the most frustrating.

This. Somtimes they'll crumble, other times they can eat 3 shots. Lead out in front of their head so you get some shot into the head and neck and not the body.

They see really well. Be very still. Put your bead on its beck and squeeze the trigger. Then move to the next one and then the next one. Can usually take down several if you let them come down into the decoys. They also can take forever to drop down from the stratosphere.

Don’t be impatient, let them get close to you. They will circle and circle and you’ll be tempted to shoot early if you duck hunt a lot.

Leave the skin on if you breast them out. Reverse sear on a smoker and throw skin side down into a cast iron with lots of butter until skin is crispy and sear the other side.
