Our Excellent Trip to Asheville

My wife (pics on another website) and I, with one of my wife's friends (same), just returned from five days in Asheville visiting my daughter and SIL, who recently returned home from two years in Ecuador. A few random observations:
Asheville airport is a big Charley Foxtrot right now. They are essentially constructing a new terminal within the existing one. No jetways - had to disembark and later board over a ramp. My wife is somewhat disabled so it was a real hassle.
Signs of the hurricane's devastation are evident, most notably at Biltmore Village and the River Arts District, but downtown is mostly back in business - most shops, restaurants and brewpubs were opened.
We stayed at a BnB on the South Slope, near downtown. The rates were very reasonable.
We experienced unexpected delays in getting Uber rides. On previous trips, you could usually get an Uber in five to ten minutes; on this trip, the wait was usually fifteen to thirty minutes.
We visited the Grove Park Inn for drinks and to sit by the blazing fireplace. The drinks were good but expensive, and we were disappointed that only one fireplace was going. Instead of the large logs they usually burn, they had gas logs.
My wife's favorite Asheville restaurant is Chestnut - it was fantastic as usual.
The Biltmore House was decked out in all its Christmas glory. We spent a few hours there before enjoying dinner at the Stable Restaurant.
Several times, the Uber driver and the wait staff at the pubs and restaurants expressed appreciation for our visiting the city as it works through recovery.

I was there before the floods as my daughter spent the summer there. Just seeing it on television is so depressing. She was in the Swannanoa area which was hit very hard obviously.

quote:Yeah, the recently installed gas logs on one end of the lobby. They burn those all year long, even in the summer. The other one still burns wood logs. Surprised they weren’t using it.

We were there a couple of years ago, and even then experienced difficulty getting an Uber/Lyft one day. We were trying to get from downtown to the Grove Park Inn at around 5 pm, but the app kept bumping the time estimate for a car, and none were in site on the map. We finally gave up.
We used rideshare several other times over a week, and it was usually fine. Not sure what happened that day.

Did you happen to dine at Curate? Had one of the best meals there a few years back.

I have a week vacation planned for the Asheville area the second week of May. I am now looking at AirBnb options . My original plan was to stay west of Ashville in a home with a mountain view. We will rent a car and try to explore as much of Western NC as possible (Despite various road closures)
Would you suggest staying in town or is my plan to stay outside of town (closer to the Waynesville area) a solid one?

My preference is to stay near downtown Asheville. There is much to do in the Waynesville area and Maggie Valley, but you'll want to get into Asheville on occasion, and the drive on I-40 can be frustrating.
We've gotten great rentals in Asheville though Towns Property Management
