I understand the paranoia but I think it sets a terrible precedence if you leave a team out like SMU in this scenario

Some people only want to talk about wins and ignore losses. SMU only lost 2 close games and to teams that will be ranked in the Top 20. Gumps lost to 2 teams that aren't even above .500. And SMU has 2 more wins. But the committee is in the TV networks pockets so won't be surprised if they go with the Gumps.

Conference championships are big money. If you punish teams in the championship and give their playoff spot to a team that was behind them in rankings and didn’t make a conference championship, that will cause too much outrage.
