Upgrading son's iPhone - several questions.

My 18 year old is really hard to buy for. He believes that if something works, he doesn't need a new one. So that I can give the kid something for Christmas, I want to get him a new phone. I know nothing of iPhones.
He's currently using a 12 mini. I think he likes the small size. He will not care one bit if his new phone is the latest. We are on Verizon.
What model would be a good upgrade, and how should I go about doing it? Would switching to AT&T be a benefit at all? Are trade ins worth doing?

Don't complain too much....
An 18 y.o. who is satisfied with anything is rare these days....

The only safe option in this scenario is iphone 13 mini but good luck finding new ones.
I'm also a fan of the smaller sizes but the phone market has completely abandoned them. There is nothing comparable at this time and anything else is going to feel ridiculously larger.

I would either get him the iPhone 15, iPhone 16, or iPhone16 Pro. Any would be fine as it sounds like he doesn't care much about having the latest features. They will all be slightly bigger, but he'll just have to get used to it. I'm on AT&T which typically has good trade in deals, as long as you upgrade somewhat regularly. I would log into your Verizon account and go through the process of selecting which phone you want, which phone you are trading in and it will tell you exactly what you would pay.
