Game came out much early this year but I didn't see a thread for it. I finally got around to getting this recently, am probably a little over half way done.

It's definitely one of the weirdest games I've ever played that's for sure.

It's fundamentally an action style game, kinda Devil May Cry meets Sekiro in terms of gameplay.

That part is done extremely well. It's far more forgiving than a Soulslike game though, there's really no penalty for death other than annoyance and you're way more OP just because of how fast and agile you are. There is a hard mode that unlocks after you beat the game on normal. I definitely think they shoulda had that as an option from the get go however, because this genre of gameplay attracts experienced gamers who want challenge and most of them will find normal too easy.

Where this game stands out is obviously the ridiculously sexy girl characters though. In a modern Western gaming world of aggressively plain, androgynous, ugly female characters, this game has absolutely no issue with making the girls over the top sex bombs. That alone will make it worth playing for some.

Game is very "anime" in general, expect a lot of weird stuff in that regard. Story, character designs, dialog, all weird Asian shite.

But there is a lot of tonal inconsistency and even genre inconsistency.

The first act is very much what you would expect, a linear style sci-fi world with bits of exploration and secrets and stuff, very well done. Very minimally invasive story too.

But then all sudden out of nowhere in the second act it decides it wants to be an open world style game with a heavy in your face story line and long cuts scenes and shite. You're in this desert city and it's suddenly Asian Firefly. Tons of NPCs, pointless little "quests" to do for them, open areas to explore. The open world stuff is pretty dreadful. Not because it's flat out bad exactly but mostly because it doesn't fit at all with this style of combat or genre. People who play action games want action, not wandering around big open empty areas and shite. The open world stuff feels like a chore.

Thankfully the game does pivot back to the more structured, linear type sci fi areas and those are significantly more fun and just way better aesthetically too.

They do a good job of introducing new systems and mechanics as the game progresses as well, which keeps things fresh.

Like I said, a very good game but a weird game, even outside the anime camp. Had the potential to be great but they made some really bizarre choices in terms of structure.

Its one of the best game this year and one of the best hack a slashers at AAA or high AA level since DMC 5. I mean its so fricking stylish this clip of my random gameplay alone oozes the style

I enjoyed it but you’re spot on about the open world part. I’m a huge Souls fan but never played Devil May Cry 5. Would I like it? What’s it like?

Stellar blade isnt a souls like. It merely apes the most surface level structure of it like estus flasks and bon fires (vending machines this time!)

It is a tried and true hack and slasher. DMC5 is something that will be much more in line with the game, however it id much more difficult imo but in a different way. The combos and possible button computations are a lot lot higher in dmc5 where as stellar blade stream lines it more and puts its difficulty in other parts

It is seriously an amazing game. It is going to do gang busters for shift up on pc. Theyre already went public as a company after the launch was a mega sucess on ps5 alone.

Pc will get the best version too with the boss gauntlet and 2B from nier cross shite etc

You'd almost certainly like it. It's a pure action game game, much faster paced combat than a souls type game. No real RPG mechanics or gear or anything like that. You gradually unlock new moves and combos and stuff as you go. Decently challenging combat (although DMC5 is much easier than old DMC games IMO).

You're correct. The game had a bit of an identity crisis. Linear action game, to open world fetch quest simulator, to Dead Space / Resident Evil tribute, back to open world shite, back to linear action at the end

The combat system is really great and parries and dodges feel really, really good. By the end when you've mastered it, it's really fun and responsive. Game was a bit too easy overall, but the last 2 bosses are real arse kickers

I took the time to plat it and it wasn't too bad, but man did I get sick of the fishing and finding diaries and shite. I really hope the sequel realizes where the gold was with Stellar Blade 1 and tightens things up with some more environmental variety. No more deserts and wastelands and shite

Still a great game though. The 3rd act with the assault on the lunar elevator was spectacular. Really wish they let you don the Providence suit to have a space fight with the big bad though Instead we got an admittedly cool QTE

The new big update is live btw. Photo mode and four new costumes from nier like 2B are in the game along with some new customization options and tweaks to things like insta kill moves and how they auto target. There is also some type of paid dlc involving nier automata that will be up tomorrow on the 20th that im not exactly sure what it entails other than it has the merchant emil in it. I believe it will be 8.99

I have a handful of a possy of what you might call detractors. Theyre not serious people ignore them. Its most likely your post is just a casualty of war.

There are a few heavily progressive people on this board who dislike anything that isn’t supported by Sweet Baby, Inc.

So I downloaded the new dlc. It is 9.99

I really like their approach to dlc. A big free update came out with photo mode that actually makes you use it with various quest on the job board hinting at locations in game to use it at and this is the best photo mode i think ive ever seen. Eve can do some really funny goofy serious or sexy things if you want her to. The reward for this is a taste of what the paid dlc ultimately delivers which is all cosmetic basically but a lot of it. By doing the photo mode quest youll get a few new nier inspired outfits. You also are given an accessory that allows you to alter tachy mode into something that nier automata fans will really enjoy. So all that is free

If you buy the dlc emil from nier will sort of multiversal travel into stellar blade and set up shop as a merchant similar to how he acts in nier. There are new collectibles called tears or something throughout the wasteland and great dessert you can find with some very well hidden. You buy the shop items with them. It has four nanosuits a face accessory three new hairstyle and a cosmetic for the drone adam and lilly. The game has also been updated will new visuals youll notice a bunch of places that are inspired i think to invoke photo mode use and they work.

Very good update. As far as if the 9.99 is worth it or not id say for people who enjoy nier automata it is 100%. if you dont or have no idea what it is Idk if i can recommend it because youll have no idea wtf is happening what it means or why you should care.

As far as gameplay not too much. The combat has been tightened up in some places where hit boxes or things were a bit rough and the whole package is more refined.

As I'm progressing through the game I find the open world stuff less annoying. I think a big part of it is the shock of gameplay styles changing so quickly. And the dessert area is better than the wastelands area.

The little set pieces of finding hidden cans also provides some good distraction and makes them feel not as empty.

I like the new photo mode quests too. Reminds me of the treasure map quests in RDR2 or the memories in BOTW, I kinda like these geoguesser style activities in big games.

It's crazy there's a full blown fishing game inserted now, I can easily see myself wasting hours on it. It's Ocarina of Time all over again.

A lot of people complained about how long it took to fill out the fishing. I disagree. You can fill out the entire list in like 30 minutes if youre lucky and45-60 at most. Almost every fish can be caught in the little square pool beside the rest spot in the opening sequence before xion. The few that cant you scoop up at the huge cave pond by the comms tower in the wasteland.

People have this tendency to massively exaggerate small parts of games they personally don't like. I guess if you hate doing something, doing it for an hour feels like an eternity so it warps your perspective.

The fishing part was simple. Didn’t detract at all.

You can do it or not do it. Doesn’t matter.

As for the complaint about tonal shifts, I enjoyed it.

The first time it shifted from hack and slash to the other game type was really well done.

I enjoyed it a lot.
