My brother is having this surgery on Monday. He is in ICU having an infusion to keep his blood pressure up for spinal cord perfusion. The misalignment has caused a callus to form on his spinal cord. Anyone have any experience with this surgery? Just wondering about post-op results, recovery etc.

I had C2 through T2 fused this year in April.
Four days in hospital and 5 days in Rehab hospital. I spent the time in the rehab hospital more for pain management than for any rehabilitation. It will be tough on him but not horrendous. Wearing the neck brace for 4 months through the summer was incredibly uncomfortable.
Make sure he goes to the best rehab facility possible, some are just like a nursing home. He needs one operated by a hospital.
Today, I have some areas still a little tight, and as expected, flexibility is more limited, but no pain at all.

If you'd like more details/information, I can give you/him my email address.

No experience with that procedure but I had a tumor removed from my spinal cord 2 months ago. When he gets home he will need a walker, and some safety rails to get down and up off the toilet. Various ice packs, grabbers, and wedge pillows will also be a big help. Best of luck to your brother.

Sounds like it's too late but I always recommend a disc replacement vs the spinal fusion based on our experience with my wife have this procedure. This preserves range of motion and doesn't require fusion or long term recovery. She was in early in the morning for the procedure and out in the afternoon. Wore a neck brace until she was comfortable and recovered at home.

Just have to find a doctor that does this surgery vs the old school fusion.

Make sure it isn’t an old school doctor doing this. Otherwise he will never not experience pain. Not sure where you’re located, but my dad recently had a cage put in and after over 40 years and 4 major back surgery’s, he is actually pain free. I recommend avala surgical hospital/disc of la to anyone.

Wow, that may be an option for a single level fusion for pain relief, not an option for this scenario

Remember there’s more surgeons doing fusions than artificial disc. And these surgeons know more than the common person you.

Those artificial disc fail more than they work. Almost 80% of artificial discs are back in surgery for a fusion years later. Just an FYI

I have three cervical vertebrae fused in my neck.

Sounds like your brother has other issues besides what I had.

Mine was outpatient with about six weeks of limited activity. That was 21 years ago. No long term issues except that when I get hit on the top of my head I feel it more due to less shock absorption. Spinal discs are amazing things.

Before giving advice, please ensure you have an idea what you’re babbling about.

“Some are just like a nursing home”. Yeah, that’s called a skilled nursing facility, which is completely different than an inpatient rehab.

“He needs one operated by a hospital”
I’m just going to laugh at this statement because you are beyond clueless. OP, listen to nothing this person is speaking about.

An aquantice had this procedure. 100% satisfaction.

I have a titanium fusion with bone graft in my neck. Did nothing except drink, eat and took pain pills for one month. Great results.

Was coming to post the same thing.

He could’ve said TH and generated more interest in the thread.

Okay it’s Tigerhoney. I should have known better than to try and put one past the OT OG sleuths. We are ten years divorced and she is having the surgery in Colorado at a Level I trauma center outside Denver. I appreciate the responses here. She is giving the nurses hell out there as expected.

How did she injure herself?

It’s from cumulative trauma over the years. She has always been a do it yourself type. Lifting things she should have been lifting, projects around the house. She had a bad fall snow skiing a few years ago that I am sure contributed to it.
