13th Gate vs. Rise Haunted House

My company staff wanted to do a haunted house this year in October so we did 13th Gate. I found it disappointing but I think that was because we had a group of 10 so if you were in the back you didn't get all the scares like the front or middle.
I just saw someone share Rise Haunted House in Tickfaw area. Has anyone else done both and how do they compare. I see Rise has 3 attractions with Haunted House, Asylum and Hayride. Out of those 3 which is the must see.

F this $40 to get into a haunted house.
Bring back the $5 Al Azaar haunted house that the Shriners used to do in Baton Rouge.

I agree. As a very young kid that was made to go through it in the early 80s, it did the job of scaring my arse.

Man the Al Azar Grotto haunted house was awesome. The guy with the chainsaw that would chase you around. Was scary as shite as a 7 year old kid.

This is what happens when adults celebrate Halloween and make it about them instead of kids.

No thats what happens when you have 150+ staff working each night between actors/security/attendants/makeup + off-season construction and design work

For sure. 13th gate is not an inexpensive operation. A lot of people would be blown away by how much the construction and design aspect is

The 13th gate is a nationally ranked haunted house. I doubt you’ll find better in Tickfaw.
I grew up with the City Park haunted house. Sheriff somebody. Back then they didn’t hesitate to grab you either.

We’ve done Rise but not 13th.
Rise was damn good but 13th looks even better. Iirc at Rise the Asylum thing is the hardcore version where they may chase or even touch you but the website should clarify that.
I don’t think the group problem you describe can be avoided unless you go in two groups.

I'm surprised they dont charge more. I don't know how they make money tbh, though I'm guessing the actors dont make shite. Still, there are so many of them.
They bring production designers over from Hollywood to consult on set buildouts and have all kinds of work that goes on year-round. It definitely shows. I took the young cousins this year and they added a big Stranger Things section at the very end. We were all blown away by how well done it was

We did Rise this weekend. The haunted house is nothing special, but fun.
We also did Asylum and wasn't too impressed. It isn't like the other house. Its more of a interactive play you walk through. They tell you when and where to go.
They do touch you alot. They touch your face, grab your hand, shoulders etc. They also invade your person space, but you are aware is happening not like a jump scare where they touch you when you don't know its coming. They are actors doing a scene and they interact with you while you watch the scene. Several rooms are just monologues and the scare actors just screaming dialogue at you. Its creepy at times, but i wouldn't say its scary.
I am not upset I did it, but I wouldn't do it again. I would do the main haunted house multiples times though.
Skip the hayride.

The House of Shock was the best Haunted House in the area. Has anyone been to The Mortuary in New Orleans?

13th Gate is consistently ranked the #1 haunted house in the country FWIW

We took a group of kids to Rise 3 weeks ago. I havent been to 13th Gate in a couple years but Rise was way better, scarier. 13th Gate, the sets are really well done but it's not very scary. Rise was tense and has pretty dang good sets too.
The main Rise haunted house is well done, scary, takes a while to get through.
We also did the Asylum, which allows the actors to touch you. Asylum is more of a story, the actors speak and are telling a story, like a walking live movie. Not as scary but I enjoyed it.
If only doing 1 do the Rise main haunted house. but we bought a pass online for both the haunted house and the asylum that saved like $10.

I get it, but the fact that my family of 5 would cost $200 keeps me away.
I just wish there was a $10-20 haunted house for my teenage kids who don't need such an extreme experience. It seems like every haunted house in the state has the $40 ticket prices.
quote:
Visitors - The 13th Gate is a popular haunted house attraction in downtown Baton Rouge that draws more than 50,000 visitors each year.
Ticket prices - Visitors can pay up to $60 for a ticket to spend an hour or so in the attraction, which features zombies, vampires, clowns, live snakes, and other terrors
50,000 visitors X $40 per ticket is 2 million dollars gross in a short time frame. Even after operating costs, they're still making a decent net profit. They also make money from concessions, extras, and merchandise.

Yeah we went back to the Mortuary this year for the first time in about 6 years.
I thought it was great. They put a lot of $ into the sets.

House Of Shock was my favorite.

I used to do haunted houses with the local Jaycees back in the 90s. Even co-chaired one year.
The workers were volunteer other than security but we still had to pay for materials, installing fire systems if there wasn't one, insurance, etc.
I think we charged $5 back in 93 but I am sure it would be much more if done now.

They actually make more
$35 regular ticket
$75 VIP ticket
Let's say 60/40 split between the two and assume that the 50k visitor figure from 2014 is correct
30,000 x $35 = $1,050,000
20,000 x $75 = $1,500,000
So lets assume $2,550,000 revenue
Actors are paid $60/night per a reddit post I just found, and they're 1099 instead of W2. They also get a bonus at the end depending on # of nights worked. Not factoring in bonus, lets put staff count at 160 total from a recent Advocate article (120 actors + 40 black shirt staff/security) per night.
120 x $60 = $7200/night x 20 nights per year = $144,000 staff payroll. Pretty miniscule
They swap out 5 of the 20 sets per year during the offseason. This is where all of of the costs come. Between consulting, design, construction, props, etc, I'd love to know about what they spend per set.
They did a new sewer section this year that was incredibly big and well done. As someone in the construction business, I would kill to get a glimpse into how they do it all and how long it takes
