Anyone have one during the storm? How big and what did it run if so.

I was out of town during this storm and I was thinking this would have been helpful during the storm for my wife and kids to use while storm was hitting and power out.

After storm passed, the 10k generator was used.

Also thinking the inverter would be good on small outages when you don’t necessarily want to pull out the big gas generator. Thoughts? Cost is the only down side

it’s a battery that recharges with a solar panel. If that works for you then go for it

what it is not however is a generator

3.5 kw pure sine inverter $270
LINK
13s charger $17
LINK
3kwh/11kw battery $200
LINK
13s 200a bms $60

This will run fridges for days. Maybe a small ac for a couple hours.

Yes I realize what it is and it doesn’t generate anything.

Just thinking it might be handy while storm is hitting and it’s not safe to go out and hook up generator.

Have you built this out before? Is it all plug and play?

I was really thinking more about one of the all in one systems. Bluetti or Ecoflow

like dallaswho said, if you want a back-up solar system just do that (the portables are really for RVs and the like). get and mount a panel, wire to inverter/charge controller/batteries, and plug in.

this has been done for decades at camps all across the fruited plain

Some measuring and soldering involved along with building out an enclosure or rack or whatever.
I have something similar but the battery doubles as an EV ATV battery. That’s too much money to run fridges for a couple days when you can get an equally capable gasser for like $200.

Isn't it cloudy during storms?

looks like there is a battery management system built into that battery for the various (assuming)18650 cells, i would not use any other system

I would love to have a small off grid system for backup power. Could use daily too to offset cost by saving on grind power. I know it would take 20 years to pay for itself but that wouldn’t be my reason for purchasing.

Wouldn’t replace gas generator either but if gas would become hard to get in extended outage it would be nice.

I didn’t look but most of these upcycled units have an onboard balancer and a can bus board to talk to an external BMS. Easier to rip it all out and use one you have specs and directions for. Still super high quality industrial grade stuff is much better than getting some consumer product.

They have some systems with generator control in a load manager that will run off the PV or battery and fire up the generator if it needs to. I was just at a conference last week talking to the guys from Franklin about trying it out on my house later this year.

I was in the middle of getting my whole home battery backup system installed when the storm hit. It's now complete and ready for the next one.

Sol-Ark 15k inverter with 32kwh of battery backup. Generator input port to charge batteries during an extended outage. 30% tax credit available for whole home battery backup systems puts me in line with the cost of a Generac. Looking into solar panels now. I would only consider the incremental cost of the solar panels in my ROI calculation as I'm already in for the cost of the backup system.
