Re-watched Game minus Brown Drink

Watching the game live it felt like the run game was atrocious and maybe the few run plays called late in the game that went nowhere tainted my overall view of the run game.
-Looking at the yards gained on the run plays were actually not bad. Of course the couple of breakouts by Emory looked great. But overall it wasn't that awful. 3-4 yards every time, a few chunk runs, and a few that went 0. That is about what you expect. So I don't feel as bad about the run game like I did before.
-Play calling was pretty good except the ones we've complained about in the 2nd half. Those were some clutch periods in the game and the play calling didn't play to our strengths. In clutch times you have to call plays that are your strengths.
-Where did Lacy go in the 2nd half?
-Need some sweeps
-Both these QB's were awesome and extremely accurate. Moss was more clutch and Nuss wasn't on a couple plays.
-Unsportsmanlike fouls have to stop. They were killers.

But the expectation is we would wear them down, and in the 3rd/4th we would go run heavy and break their spirit. Maybe a game sealing drive where we only run the ball.

The blocking sucked but I just don’t think we have the personnel to run out of the shotgun. You need a quick/shifty back for that run style which we haven’t had since Clyde. Jackson and Williams are bruisers and Emery is kinda a hybrid who had a couple nice runs but I thought he looked slow too. He should have housed that long run

I'm convinced the main reason we lost was because we chose to receive the ball in the 1st AND then doubled down and went for it on 4th and goal. I'm no statistician but I'm willing to bet when two top 25 teams play the teams that receive the ball first and fail on 4th and goal have a good 10% to 20% higher chance of losing. Doing that to kick off the game affects so many dynamics... motivation, psyche, etc. This is what's so discouraging to me. LSU lost because the head coach continues (same thing last year vs FSU) to make stupid game day decisions. You can't fix that. Kelly is Les 2.0

Not going for points on the first drive?

Not really. Take away the big run, Emery is 9/28, barely 3 YPC. Same for Josh's long run (12), take it away and he is 8/22, under 3 YPC. Those 2 runs are 40% of the gross rushing yards. That's not even counting the 7 yards of losses.
So, overall the rushing was awful.
The key positives to take away are that:
Nuss played well, overall, and completed passes to 11 different players, with at least 2 passes to 5 of them.
The offensive line is good at pass protection
The tackling is still bad, but improved
The front 7 played reasonably well for most of the game
A couple of DBs are capable of making plays, although we still have exactly 0 proven SEC-caliber corners (and Kelly thinks the safeties are the problem -

Rewatched it last night as well. We played a lot better than what I thought at the time. Defense gave up some chunk plays periodically, but Saivion and Weeks looked incredible. Nuss looked good 90% of the time and I think we're going to be ok.
Clean up the stupid fricking penalties and act like you've been there before. Might be better for them to get this dose of humility now than later in the season.

USC completely took him out of the game. They made great defensive adjustments.

Sloan took him out of the game. He had 2 targets

Agree. We personally killed every drive in the second half.

No he didn't.
He had two targets BECAUSE USC WAS DOUBLE COVERING HIM
I swear this fanbase is retarded

Yes, glad to hear this specifically called out by Kelly. A shame we’re here, but glad to hear it’s been recognized.
- Exactly. We have Anderson and Thomas and it’s absolutely criminal to not have at least 2-4 horizontal runs with them, whether it’s sweeps or bubbles.
We did not have USC moving laterally at all. They just played downhill without having to think.

I agree Ace, 3-4 yrds avg. That is what you expect from an SEC school. Of course we would like that to be 5 yd/carry, but it just wasn't as bad as I thought initially. I think we will be OK here. Not great, but OK.

The problem is that the few that went for 0 were all on 3rd or 4th and short yardage, so those stand out the most.

rewatched the game as well, lol, other observations
- we need to run our receivers past the sticks on 3rd and 3 to 8 yards, there were at least 3 completions that didn't move the chains on 3rd down
- our blocking schemes need more trapping instead of so much what looked like zone blocking
- Nuss is gonna need to pull a few zone reads to keep the crashing d ends honest
-this is the best 3 pass catching TE's lsu has ever had, problem is, not sure any can block which hurts you in the run game
- sage is not a boundary corner, he may be ok at star though (I'm pretty sure he'd be better than burns; i'd move woodland to outside cb and get him ready
- to my eye 2 and 8 were as bad in coverage as they statistically showed in other posts
- on defense, 4, 17, 15, 0, 33, 40, 1, 6 all flashed which is great; 90 and 99 were ok i guess

The biggest single play on offense that would have at least been a first and goal or put us up by 7 was the little 5 yarded to Anderson with the end zone 8 yards away. Nuss was so excited he missed him. That was game over I thought.

Sloan did or Kelly did? Kelly has been coaching for 41 years and didn’t get the idea “get the ball in Lacy’s hands”.. Both deserve blame.

Primarily because the play calls were so predictable.

Well then others should have been running free. Either way, we should have torched them
