In June I played my first ever souls game. The name Dark Souls just never sounded like a genre for me. I’m not into horror or gore typically ever.
Elden Ring had just enough tip of the cap to the fantasy vibe like Elder Scrolls to where this summer I tried it out.
120 hours later it was straight to the top of the best games of all time on my list.
Then I played Dark Souls Remastered this month. Absolute masterpiece. It must have been mind blowing in 2011 because it stills holds up today.
I went down the path of DS2 but got bogged down and frustrated with the stupid ADP mechanic and general jank (the vibe of Majula is still absolutely amazing) but I quit about 15 hours in.
Just beat Dark Souls 3 last night with the DLC left to beat still.
I have a successful career and multiple kids. I have put in 250 hours since June by purely neglecting my sleep.
Is this anyone else’s experience? These games are just absolute addiction machine. Slaying a boss who has kicked your arse for an hour while your heart is pounding is a feeling in gaming I’ve just never felt. The tension of pushing just a little bit deeper while you are out of Estus and packed with Souls looking for the Bonfire.
Somebody please send help. I’m addicted.

They’ve ruined a lot of other games for me. I just don’t get the same feeling or enjoy them as much.

I absolutely feel that. I tried to assassins creed odyssey and it just felt so damn handholdy.
Even bumping the difficulty up and turning off the HUD don’t feel right. It feels like an artificial limitation rather than the handcrafted, thoughtful difficulty in a Souls game.
You can tell those games literally weren’t designed to be played that way.
I am going to have to take PTO for the next big FromSoftware release

I absolutely cannot wait to read through those

And I just read through them all. Very similar to how I felt in many spots ha.
It’s funny how some folks can one shot different bosses and get their arse kicked by others.
Pontiff I one shot and didn’t really break a sweat. Twin princes? Wrecked my shite for hours.

Lol. Yes! My exact experience. I couldn't finish Elden Ring b/c I have a really bad benign tremor, so I accidentally press the wrong buttons at terrible times mid-fight. And From doesn't make games where i can overcome that. But Fromsoft was absolutely a revelation for my gaming experience. I did finish DS2 & DS3 and loved them both.

My one rule is that anyone who tells me that they found Friede easy irrationally annoy me

Tell friede and midir “frick you” for me.

On replay, I found Friede to be more fair. An absolute bitch of a fight due to its length and changing mechanics, but not horribly unfair. Just really hard.
Midir is a shite boss fight. I don’t know why From struggles with dragons so much. All of them have absolutely awful hitboxes, which make the fights more frustrating than they have any right to be. I think I first or second tried Midir last time, but I still left the fight feeling mildly annoyed.
And OP, I just remembered this thread as well if you wanted more reading material: LINK /

I never read Devious’ first playthrough thread until now. Holy frick, was Pectus real?

I miss Pectus. His playthrough commentary was so awesome.

Go back to DS2 - just level ADP, it’s not difficult. I wish they had kept bonfire ascetics.
Soon you’ll be in my shoes - 100% every single FS game from King’s Field to Shadow of the Erdtree and nothing new to play that compares.

I actually really really freaking liked DS2. The vibe at Majula is probably the best I’ve ever seen in a game.
I actually played both SoTF and vanilla and think I prefer vanilla but both times I got right to or slightly past the lost bastille and I just put it down. But for the first 10 or so hours I was completely hooked on the gameplay loop.
I’m going to power through DS3 dlc and then go back to ds2.

This really is the best way of putting it.
I honestly can't play mediocre games and enjoy them anymore.

Same many games are ruined. Especially soulless triple AAA profit machine games. Also cinematic story based games.
I do find some Indy games and some AA games from time to time that are playable.
They typically were made by people who actually give a damn.

I really don't get this sentiment. I mostly love From games (primarily DS3 and Elden Ring), just finished the base game of Elden Ring and still exploring the world with around 110 hours game time, but I'm honestly ready for something different. Think i'm going to get back into Horizon Forbidden West and try to 100% that world.
As much as I like how From sort of buries their lore to add to the discovery aspect of the game, I do eventually miss understanding why I'm doing what I'm doing.

Oddly the only one I want to play is bloodborne, but I don't want to buy a PlayStation.

As I read through the thread, I kept waiting for him to burst out laughing and say he was fricking with you all the entire time

Also, think I might do a no pyro SL1 all bosses run soon. Anything outside of your thread you think I should know? Thinking I'm going to go with a lightning hand axe. Also, why did you select to forgo the amulet on Manus? I always considered managing it and estus to be a core component of that fight.
