Looking at starting a small business and need a lawyer to help with contracts, etc. What kind of lawyer would be best for this?

What kind of business is it? Are you looking for guidance on growth and getting investors or just help setting up an entity and getting form contracts in place?

Setting up contracts and making sure everything is legit with a partner that I’m working with. Essentially someone to have my back and interest so I don’t get screwed down the road

Gotcha.
A lawyer that does general corporate work should be able to get the job done here. Sounds like you’ll want to set up some type of entity (probably LLC) with an operating agreement that lays out decision making, who owns what, etc.
He’ll probably be able to advise on the form contracts as well, depending on what the company does. If you’re doing software development or something IP related, you might need to find a separate IP lawyer.
Doesn’t sound like you’ll need much in the way of employment matters at this point, but there are plenty of lawyers who are competent in all three of: (1) entity formation, (2) commercial agreements, and (3) employment matters.
Good luck.

If you don't trust your partner going in that person or persons should not be your partner.

I trust them but they just have a lot more experience than I do. So they have been around the block with this stuff and I haven’t.

A lot of times colleges have free small business advising. I’d check your local school.

Kinda sounds like you need two lawyers. One to review contracts, etc. on behalf of the business, and another to review operating agreements, etc. with only your interest in mind. Would be difficult for an attorney to do both with the potential for conflict between the partners.

Talk to the lawyer about tiebreakers. Folks who go in 50/50 with a partner or LLC co-member sometimes find the whole business in a stalemate if they don't agree on a major decision.
Also discuss provisions for one buying out the other in the event of death, divorce, getting sick of each other, etc. You might not want to be partners with his widow and kids or his bitch ex-wife who gets a piece of his interest in a divorce. Or he may get dementia, become an alcoholic, etc.
Similarly, discuss what happens if the company needs an infusion of cash (capital call) but only one partner/member is able or willing to contribute. Can be handled various ways, including acquiring a part of the defaulting member's interest in compensation.
People go in thinking of how to split profits and potential good results. A lawyer can help plan for potential bad times and make them suck less if they happen.

Reach out to Arena Collective and ask for Jared Miguez or Lauren Navarre. They are both very sharp and savvy
