On this day in 1954, the mighty Herk had it's first flight. The LONGEST production aircraft in the world, it's still rolling off the assembly line, 70 years later. If it's been thought of in aviation, it's been tried in a Herk. The most verstile aircraft every built, and the sexiest.

I'm lucky to have flown over 20 variants for the last 25 years. Going to strap one on and take to the skies this AM. God bless the might Herk, the crews that fly it, the folks that keep 'em flying, and the folks still building them.

I'll bet that that thing was barely hanging on by the tips of the blades, what in the heck was that for?

Waiting for the preflight to be finished, don't want to get too sweaty.

The J model can cruise in the 30's. It was shiny and new, so we tried it. We made gas.

Seeing traveler's pic of Fat Albert, are JATO tubes still used? Saw the Blue Angels at Belle Chasse (NAS New Orleans) a few times and the JATO tube demonstration was very impressive.
