Anyone in here have any experience diving for Spiny Lobster down in The Keys?

Looking for recs for a charter in The Keys. Have a small group of about 6 friends/family that want to go.

TIA

Absolutely no help in the Keys, but I used to do it all the time when I lived in southern California.

It was a lot of fun and those things are delicious. I also used to use a Hawaiian sling for spearfishing. That and the weather are about all I miss from my fee years in California.

It looks very fun and has been a bucket list item for me for some time now.

I bet the Keys would be awesome. That Pacific is so cold you're wearing 7 mil wetsuit and 5 mil hood, gloves and booties.

Used to go after the spiney lobster every other weekend in Puerto Rico. They are found under the coral and in holes. Technically you are supposed to ease your hand in behind them and catch with your hand. I had located a Childs model spear gun that was perfect for impalling and retrieval. Probably not legal. But the gotta a ways went to zero, and I was no longer concerned about grabbing a moray eel

Good cut/puncture resistant gloves and a tickle stick ate all you need. Never liked lasso. Walk them out with the tickle stick then grab them. Once you go for ty4 grab, you have to commit. If you touch an antenna, they are gone.

When are you looking to go? The first couple of weekends are by far the best. I would suggest you dont need a guide if you go during mini season or soon after, but if you are going this winter its probably not a bad idea.

You pretty much just look for ledges and rocks and they like to hide under them.

Not sure of charters for them. The guys I worked with when stationed in Miami just took their gear or rented it and explored for themselves. All seemed successful. But, it was honestly just a weekend getaway during the season to hang out away from wives and GFs.

I'll ping a couple to see if they have any recs and circle back

Take this for what it's worth as sketchy as it sounds.

But, I got it from Kit Carson (not the cowboy, just the top sailfish captain in the keys), he said best advice for lobsters around Islamorada was to rent a boat yourself and call a private guide if your not comfortable finding reefs by yourself.

He recommended a guy. I don't feel comfortable putting his private # here, but I can email you if you share yours.

Like I said above finding lobsters is not hard early in the season, it’s finding keepers later in the season. Tons of lobster during mini season and the other times, it’s just that most are short because they are picked through past mid August. Guides just have 500 gps numbers to check and any random going the first time will just have to work through spots to find them.

So you really are just paying a guide to have a better chance to keep a good bit of lobster.

What I do feel comfortable with is sharing that if you want a charter out of the Keys, Robbies boat ramp in Islamorada with the Dirty Boat with Kit Carson is #1. You'll not be sorry or he'll make it right.

My point as well.

Snorkel or diving, just find a reef and poke.

It's about the experience as much as the catch

I’ve been once. We hauled a boat down to Islamorada and just went out blindly during the mini season. Weather did not cooperate and we struggled. Never did figure out the lasso or the tickle stick, but we got lucky and just grabbed a few. All the videos on YouTube show guys gently easing them out with the stick and scooping them up, but every one I touched with a stick just vanished in a cloud of sand.

Not anytime soon. Earliest would be next year. Just looking for the best option for 3 couples with not much experience with lobstering.

I watch a few guys on YT also. They make it look easy, which could be deceiving. Considering they have been doing that for many years.

I've done it,,,,we did both sides of key west,,,,the east side has a big wall, its a bit deeper and the lobsters were a little larger there but not as many,,,,, the primary fields are to the west in the shallows,,,,,,,we rented a party barge and we had 3 tanks per day,,,,,,we got into the area where there are lots of coral and rocks and then we towed two people behind the boat with goggles and snorkels to find the actual best concentrations of rocks and coral,,,,,once we found that, we got the scuba gear on and hit the bottom,,,,its about 25' deep so you have good bottom time. It used to be that the recreastional season started a week before the commercial season, now they run together,,,,,,that puts you at a disadvantage. There are charter operators who know the best spots,,,,,,if you want your best chance, book one of those and that will give you a good idea where the best lobster fields are and you can go on your own the next day. Heres a link to where the fields are

Spent the summer on a friend of my fathers sail boat. They were retired Army and needed an extra hand getting their sail boat up the east coast. We started in Miami and then went to the Bahama's for a couple of weeks. Then traveled up the east coast towards North Carolina.
While in the Bahama's we went snorkeling and caught a mess then grilled them. On one of my final dives I looked into a hole and a moray eel came out and almost bit me on my hand as I was reaching for a lobster.
Great summer!
