Is it worth buying a playstation 3 if I will mostly use it just for the blue ray player?

Do you play video games? If yes, get the PS3. If not, why ask the question.

It is definitely worth it. Due to internet connectivity and firmware updates and the ever expanding technology of Bluray, the PS3 will always be the newest, most up to date bluray player. The PS3 is the only player that supports BD LIVE which is the interactive portion of Bluray. My Dark Knight DVD actually can go online for extra features.

Plus to have the PS3 for exclusives wouldn't hurt. The PS3 is a good purchase.

Buy both.

It's good for the economy.

Really? Because my Samsung BluRay player is connected to the internet for updates and I have this feature as well.

Make your choice:

$399.99 for a Blu-Ray player and gaming machine.

$199.99 for a stand alone Blu-Ray player. (Cheapest I've seen.)

Difference of $200.

I have a Xbox 360 and a PS3. The PS3 has some good games that are not out on the Xbox. If you are a gamer I would consider getting. If you like baseball then MLB: The Show on PS3 is the best ever. I play duel published games on my Xbox because I find Live performs better than the free one for PS3.

Walmart had the Magnavox one for 128 on black friday.. It was given to me as a gift.. Its a pretty solid blue ray player. Cnet and consumer reports liked it as well. Im would bet that if Walmart was able to sell them for 128 that in the next few months we will see that price standard or close to it.

If you want to play games, buy a PS3. If you want a blu-ray player...wait till the price comes down and buy an up scaling dvd player right now. Will look really good on an HD TV.

You are right, but the price of bluray media is so crazy right now, its almost not worth it yet. BTW, I have a PS3 and it upscales great.

Wrong. Most of the new players can do this.

Wrong again. Any profile 2.0 player is required to have this functionality.

Also, the movie has to be profile 2.0 and I don't think there are a lot out there... any thoughts SG?

Sure. You can't use BluRay live if the publisher of the disc chooses not to include any BluRay Live content.

FWIW... So far BluRay Live is nothing but a useless gimmick as far as I can tell.

I would go with the PS3. It is center piece of my home theater setup.

I use somthing called PlayOn Media Server and it streams Youtube, Hulu, CBS Webfeeds to your PS3 and it also does Netflix as well. This is a huge plus for the PS3 over the regular bluray player.

Before the XBox Fan boys attack me... Yes I know Playon can be used on the Xbox 360. This thread is about stand alone Bluray Vs PS3 not Xbox 360 Vs PS3
