He was so awesome in Tokyo with 5 golds. He’s been nonexistent except in the 100m relay this year.

He got old and the top guys are faster than him now. Simple as that.
His disciplines are decided by hundredths, so there's essentially no room for slippage.

Damn I didn’t realize. He was old. For some reason I thought he was a young gun.
ETA: so 27 is old in swimming?

I thought he was about 30, but yes, 27 is getting up there in elite swimming. Ledecky is 27 and has slipped quite a bit in the shorter distances.
Swimming prime is about 21-24.
Hell, we see teenagers win gold medals almost every cycle, too.
Dressel in Tokyo was 24.
Phelps in China was 23.
Marchand in Paris is 22.

I wonder how much is physiological and how much is being ready to move on to something besides spending hours in the pool every day?.

They had a segment on him yesterday and talked about that. He came back from Tokyo angry and miserable about not performing as goo as he wanted, despite the golds. He felt like a failure for not breaking records. I guess the obsession was ruining his life and he did a ton of therapy work to recalibrate himself.

It’s hard to take off two years in swimming and come back at an older age and be elite. Even if you get passed by 4-5 guys you’re basically done.
Phelps really skewed our view of how dominant we should expect our swimmers to be and for how long. Honestly what he did in Rio at age 31 after taking two years off is arguably as impressive as what he did in Beijing.

Exactly and htere's a good chance that we'll see the same from Ledecky in 4 years in Los Angeles. She's indicated that she isn't done yet although she may just do the 800 and 1500 at that stage in her career.

When you’re 18-24 years old, single, and have no children, you’re dedicated 100% to swimming. 24/7/365. Pass your peak in athleticism, get married, have a kid and swimming becomes the 3rd most important thing in your life.

And it’s his 3rd Olympics. Everyone in the pool has dedicated the last 2-3 years of their life to this one week. It’s also harder to maintain that type of focus and dedication for three straight Olympic cycles.

There’s a reason Summer Mac from Canada, outside of being a phenom, is smoking everyone. She’s 17. Can recover a lot faster. Same for the men.
