I am stocking a home bar and would like to add a couple choices of each above for guests. Thank you.

I don't have specific recommendations for brandy or cognac, as I don't drink them often, but I find them to be tasty and often overlooked in the home bars. Will monitor thread for others' suggestions as I've been wanting to stock up on both of those.

As for rum I like barrel aged or agricole, provided you plan to sip neat or something close to that. I like to go local when possible so I usually have oxbow or whatever they've renamed themselves to be this month. Past that there's a number of Caribbean distillers that do a good job depending on how much you're looking to spend. Dominican ones have generally been among my favorites.

Thanks for the input; open to getting a bottle for sipping and one for mixed drinks.

What is your recommendation on distiller/brand re: rum for both?

In addition to cognac, you might explore Armagnac, cognac's country cousin. Made with a different mix of grapes.

Harder to find but I've never bought a bottle I didn't enjoy. Can easily find great ones in $50-60 range.

This is a good one. 25 year aged and less than $100. I'm far from an expert but a cognac of relatively similar quality would be more I think. I don't know enough to describe the flavor notes very well but I know I really like them.

Went through all of this in the past year. First thing to note is all cognac is brandy but not all brandy is cognacI also based mine on what is available at local liquor store/total wine.

Brandy/Cognac: Pierre Ferrand 1840. More budget option would be st remy vsop

Rum: Rum is a crazy category. If you want to stock your bar and be somewhat well rounded without going down the tiki rabbit hole I would go with a light, aged/dark, overproof, and something funky/pot still/jamaican. Gives you 4 rums and can pretty much get away with making anything with them that isnt a tiki. Light - Plantation 3 star. Havana club 3, wray & nephew, probitas, and veritas other good options. Aged/Dark - El Dorado 12. Any 5+ year el dorado or plantation would work too. Overproof - Plantation OFTD. Lemonhart 151 and hamilton 151 also good options. funky/pot still/jamaican - Smith & cross.

I'd go with Brugal for a mixing rum and a bottle of Plantation Barbados for sipping.

for mixing rum it’s hard to go wrong with mt gay, it’s a Barbados rum that goes really well with fruit juices and the like and won’t break the bank. You can go nuts with the sipping rums but for every day mt gay is a winner. If you think you’ll be making punches get a navy rum or even better, a bottle of Batavia Arrack
