John boat sale

Just bought a john boat from an acquaintance. Well I haven’t bought it, just agreed to a price. He says he has a bill of sale. Not a title. This is the first boat I’ve ever bought. I trust him, as our kids go to school together and we go to the same church. Should I be worried? Will I be a problem getting registration numbers?

Trailer will be titled not the boat. Bill of sake on boat should be sufficient to register.
If no trailer is involved you’re good to go. If it is I wouldn’t purchase without a Title. You’re asking for one huge PIA.

I don’t believe that’s true in Louisiana.
Boat and trailer have their own titles and each title is required for its own separate registration.
My experience is a bill of sale without the title is useless for registering the boat. I actually have a boat on my land rotting away that I couldn’t register because of this.

When you receive conflicting information here….call the state troopers office.

If it was bought new in recent times the hull had a title, too. Older boats won’t. If it has stickers I would ask him to retrieve the registration paperwork from LA DWLF. I do not believe you can put it your name without that paperwork.

This^^. I have a title on my boat and on my trailer. The same also applies to outboards which are now titled.

Contact state troopers for trailer title. Boat registrations are handled by LDWF.

A notarized bill of sale using the DWF form online should be sufficient provided that it has a hull id number on it somewhere.

Boats in La should have title and will need for registration. Motors used to not be registered until like 2010 or somewhere around that time frame. Boats, motors, and trailers will each need a title to be registered. Call the dept of wildlife and fisheries and they will tell you. I was a finance manager for a Marine dealership, I know the pain in the arse our state is for registration. Such bullshite

Not all boats will be titled. If the boat was financed when bought it will probably have a title. If the boat has never been titled you will only need a bill of sale with hull identification numbers to register boat with WLF. If they run the hull Id num and it’s been reported stolen, you have another problem!

They said I’d need a notarized bill of sale either way. If it has a hull ID number, that would be all I needed. They would register it at that point. If it doesn’t have a hull number, it would need to be inspected. If it passes inspection, they will register it.

Yeah, just like he said the boat is not the issue, it's the trailer.
Just say to hell with it and pay the ticket if you get pulled over for no registration.
IDK why it is such an issue with the OMV, it's a cheap registration and a bill of sale with the boat should be fine. They are stupid.
