Anyone charter a trip in Maui? If so any recommendations? I would like to fish Mahi, Tuna, and Wahoo.

Never mind, looks like availability is slim due to fires taking out a bunch of boats. I will just go with what looks like the best available, thanks anyway.

I have been told by some maui fishermen the action is much better near molokai and especially big island. Would love to hear if you find someone on Maui that can put you on em.

Went one time and scratched. After we paid up, then the captain was like, "yeah, we don't catch much around here bc the bottom drops off so fast. It's much better at Big Island." Plus the captains keep anything you catch to sell to restaurants for profit.
You're better off bank fishing for a tenth of the cost.

We are headed to Kauai next week and I looked into a charter pretty hard, it seems your story is more often the case than not. I scratched the idea, I would hate to waste half a day and the money to not catch, I feel like we could do some bottom fishing and catch a bit, but not interested in that.

I have found instagram to be the best place to find actual results. The younger captains love to post when they do well, if they are only posting once a week and you know they fish 4-6 times that’s not great.

Hawaii definitely has some great fisheries but also not great spots. As said many of the captains sell to the markets to make extra money, but I don’t think that’s a huge deal when you are staying in a hotel and most of them will work out a deal with you for the fish if you want it especially if it’s not a ton and saves them a trip to the market.

Similar experience in puerta Vallarta. Trolled for 6 hrs with zero bites. Wife seasick the whole time. After we arrived to the dock the captain says “we normally don’t catch anything until the blue water comes in around October.”

Went on some snorkeling and sub trips off Oahu, and was surprised that really didn’t see much fish, just kind of thought that was strange, but had a friend and colleague that is a trauma surgeon there and during his trauma presentations he had two guys that were impaled through the chest by Marlin in a week span… they sometimes jump around the boats and come in hot….can’t imagine going out that way, with a fish flopping, and you stuck to it…be careful out there
