All things being equal talent wise at S and CB, is Toviano better at S? He's not starting at CB and didn't seem overly comfortable as i saw him behind his guy quite a bit. he seems like a guy that could be used imaginatively with our new 3 S look. I obviously have high hopes for McBride, Kylin Jackson and Joel Rogers but I'd like to see Toviano in that mix. Also was wondering how's JuJuan Johnson been looking and where's he projecting? Looking at everything including our coaches if we can hold up in the middle I believe we could have one of those upstart defenses that plays with a chip. I trust this staff

I think Toviano is a safety. He needs to be in the starting line up or splitting reps..forget the seniority crap. We have the guys on defense, need to play the right ones

Ok so so far we're on the same page, doesn't seem natural at CB, do think he could be a real player at Star or SS. The addition of Michael Turner should help the # at CB, heard great things about his potential there. As far as im concerned we have 3-4 young stars at Safety that need to be playing early and often. Kylin Jackson, McBride and Toviano....maybe Jujuan is gonna get his try there too from what I seeing

Agree with you big time on forget the seniority crap. Get our young talents out there early and learn because we will need those guys to beat good teams. It took Les a few years to go in that direction, I'm hoping this new staff moves Kelly in the right direction here

Not enough tape on him. Hopefully zy is healing well and can own one side to allow a fight for cb1,2, nick and quality reserve.

Anywhere in front of Sage Ryan that's for sure.

He should be getting reps at star with Major Burns. Seems like Toviano would be better served near the line of scrimmage/covering backs and TE’s weighing 210-215.

What? Our starting CBs right now seem to be Stamps (true SO) and Woodland, a true freshman. We're counting on 3 true freshman DL (McKinley, Reliford, and Breaux) to give us decent reps this year. Our starting Center will be a redshirt FR. Coaches don't like playing ANY true freshman on the OL. Especially at tackle. Kelly started 2 true freshmen tackles and a true freshman TE his 1st year. Harold Perkins started as a true freshman on defense. I'm not really sure what you're talking about.

I think Kelly, like every coach, would prefer to have most of his starters filled with 3rd or 4th year 21 and 22-year-olds who've been developed in the program for a few years. Huge difference between guys that age and 18 and 19-year-olds. But he's more than proven he'll play younger guys that are so good he just can't take them off the field. Les did the same thing, and that was a made-up criticism of him. He played plenty of freshman. And you want to know one of the "secrets" to Saban's success at Bama? He was able to get buy-in from 4 and 5 stars who would be willing to stick around and wait until their 3rd or 4th years to become starters. It's why he kept replacing All-American 1st rounders with All-American 1st rounders at the same position every year. But he would play plenty of freshman too if they made the team better.

I mean, a legitimate criticism of Les was he sold the "3-year plan" and would play guys early, and they would have enough tape to be able to leave after their JR seasons. Those same type of guys from the same classes were just about to start at Bama while ours were declaring for the draft, even if they weren't sure 1st or 2nd rounders.

As for Toviano, I'm not sure what his best position is, but I don't think it's boundary corner, and I do think he's probably one of the 5 best ABs on the team. I hope Baker and Raymond (and the dude Baker brought with him from Missouri to coach safeties whose name escapes me at the moment) can figure out a creative way to get Toviano on the field. I actually think that will be a strength of this defense (largely due to necessity) is that we have a lot of versatile guys who may not have prototypical positions and Baker is going to have to be creative with both personnel and giving the opposing offenses multiple different looks.

He won't have time in August to figure out exactly how the puzzle pieces best fit together and to implement all his defense. I think we'll get significantly better as the season goes on. But can he do enough in August to get us through the USC game somehow is going to be the big question. That game is so fricking huge. With the expanded playoff, we have another mulligan, but damn it would be nice to not have to start another season in the hole.

I thought he was fine at CB, but he's a more natural S to me.

His best position is S for sure. I'm not sure why they haven't moved him there full time yet. He never really had the top end speed a CB is expected to have. He's better fit on the back end. I'm pretty sure most projected him in that place too.

Sage will be a starter but not at CB.

Toviano is still listed as a CB

I really wish the Rantards would hold off on this until they actually put pads on.

There has been no indication of Zy Alexander losing his starting job. He started every game that he played at CB last year
