The Pirates will be playing the Astros I believe July 29th, 30th, and 31st. My question is there anyway to see which one of these games Skenes will be starting?

Figure out if they use a 5, or 6 man rotation. I'm sure somebody on here would know. Then start counting from there. That'll give you a decent idea. Of course, that's after the all star break, so that may throw a wrinkle in that plan.

Then do math. Looks like Skenes has been going on 5-days rest, so just start counting out...

I've already tried to play this game

Skenes should pitch on 7/29 using his 5 days rest BUT the all star break may mess that up b/c he should have a start during the break. I'll be in Houston and I'm hoping he pitches in one of those games.

Too hard to predict especially with all-star break. Should know the rotation by 7/19.
FYI due to their schedule he’s throwing on 6 days rest this week (next outing @ ATL on Sunday)

If I had to make a prediction, I’d say he throws in Arizona & not Houston

Also depends on rainouts between now and then, whether the Pirates to decide to skip guys based on off-days or stay in rotation, thus backing up Skenes a day. Throw in the All-Star Game, and it's impossible to know with any precision whether he will start in Houston.

I was thinking the other day, the most awesome thing would be for Crews to get called up and the Pirates playing the Nats in DC the same weekend that the Bengals played the Commanders and Skenes was pitching for Pitt.

Pirates play Nationals in Pittsburgh, 9/5-9/7

Commanders play Bengals in Cincy 9/23

ETA: pirates do play in Cincy on 9/22 so that would be cool to see Skenes, Burrow, & Daniels in the same weekend

They already pushed back one of his scheduled starts a couple weeks ago.
A month out, you got 5 guys and 3 games. I’d say you got a 60% shot.

I looked at the schedules when I saw when the Commanders and Bengals were playing. I was just saying it would have been really really cool as an LSU fan to go and see Burrow vs. Daniels and Skenes and Crews in the same city in the same weekend. Massive Longshot that something like that ever lines up though.

Looks like it probably won't happen

quote:

Pirates GM Ben Cherington on workload management plan for Paul Skenes and Jared Jones : “….the goal was to put them in a position to be active pitchers for a full season, to contribute for a full season…” 1/

quote:

“…and in order to do that, we were at some point likely going to have to look at some ways to manage volume and build in some more recovery.”
Cherington said Pirates don’t want to shut them down, so it sounds like skipping or pushing back a start is a more likely alternative.

Kevin Gorman was discussing this with Pirates GM today, if they start pushing back starts (they are skipping Jones this weekend in Atlanta) then there is no telling if he pays tches or not until the week before.
