Yamaha has been in the 4 stroke game a while now but mercury has me wondering about working all the kinks out of their 4 strokes.

Anyone have experience with either? Let me have the good, the bad and the ugly on both motors.

Mercury no doubt. V6 can't compete with the torque and linear power of a V8.

Was a huge 2 stroke fan. I had a run of 6 Mercs that between them had one issue. I decided to buy my first ever new boat in 2021 and had no choice but to get the 4s. It's the 200 pro XS. Wow what a great engine. Hole shot is immediate and mid range acceleration just makes me smile. I have no idea how fast my boat will go with it, as I am too risk averse to get it to WOT.

Those sho’s had some major head issues a few years ago. I know a guy that blew a hole out the side of his with under 200 hours on it. Lots of similar stories out there as well. I’m sure they are fast, but I’ll never own one. I own a few mercs and have been happy with them.

I've had experiences with both. If I were to buy a new one today I would go SHO. I know so many people that have them and zero problems. It's you typical Chevy vs Ford debate.

I know a good bit of people with the Mercury's, and besides the electronic shift actuator in the foot, they are reliable as well.

The cherry on top for me is being able to flash the SHO. Turn that 200 into 330. I did it on my skeeter and was worth every penny. I have friends that are flashing before they even break it in now.

Looking at a new 23 Classic (horrible color but price is right) with Merc 4 stroke on it.

Have seen a few classics with a Sho but not many out there.

Take a look at the Suzukis. They are bullet proof and the only one with a 6 year warranty. I had a 175 and sunk it the first year. Washed it out, dried it, cleaned the wiring harness plugs and ran it 14 more years, ran it 45 mins to an hour each weekend for 14 years back and forth to my camp Just changed it out to a 250 Zuke

Suzuki are pretty much bullet proof but don’t really come with any glass boat.

Now if I was in the market for a Hanko it would come with it. lol

Mercury for hole shot, performance and efficiency

Yamaha for quietness, reliability. Both engines are great but I love the sounds of the V8 Mercs which is 200 and up

Not a lot of bad motors being made now in the normal power range. Yammy, Merc, Zuke, even Tohatsu.

Mine scares me every time it starts. Sounds like the lower unit is out of the water. I read that in focus groups, the early Merc 4 strokes were said to be "too quiet" and changes were made.
