Hello,
I have approx 1500sqft patio/percola area that I'd like to run a sound system for an older friend.

User is older and prefers FM radio, TV sound, and light music streaming

Not much from Juvenile being streamed so bass doesn't have to rattle windows

Budget is flexible but likely less than $3K

I'm opting away from Sonos bc the user has an android phone and it seems complicated for his tech level.

I was thinking

Yamaha Receiver

Amazon.com: Bose 251 Environmental Outdoor Speakers - Black : Electronics

100W seems good but I'm concerned they might not cover the entire patio area

I'm a little out of my depth if I need two pairs of speakers and what to order for them. Any help would be much appreciated.

Backyard is in the country with no much background noise competing against you.

Give me dimensions. When you setup an outdoor area you want to contain the space. The speakers should be set away and point back towards the house. This helps to define your space and makes bass response a little better. You generally don't get a whole lot of bass outdoors because there's nothing to contain the sound waves. If you mount on a house and point out in a large space you are trying to fill an infinite space with sound.

Covering 1500 sq ft requires quite a few speakers. To be heard 100 ft away (100 X 50 space) you're blasting the speakers. More is better in this case. If you use a receiver an impendance matching speaker selector is a must. One, you can play as many speakers as you want and only play a couple if you're covering a more intimate space. Then if you want to cover the entire 1500 sq ft you turn the other speakers on but you don't have to crank them up to get nice coverage.

A budget would be helpful. You can spend a LOT doing this. I'd go for planter speakers rather than those ugly Bose speakers. Something like Niles PS6SI these.

Yamaha Receiver
Would probably be good to know how he streams. For example, i stream to my outside speakers using Youtube Music 95% of the time. Because of this, my next receiver/amp will probably be one with Chromecast built in like some of the Onkyos.

I have two pairs of speakers outside. Each runs through their own outdoor volume control. They are connected to my receiver through a 4-way speaker selector. I can run both of those pairs and the pair in my kitchen ceiling. It works great for us and my Pioneer receiver isn't anything special.

Could you send me a link to that product please?

It's 50' x 100'

I'm mostly concerned with his pergola and patio extension which is 26 x 34 but I like the idea of adding planter speakers. I'd like to keep the Bose speakers under the pergola for gameday/raceday sound on TV

Budget is less than $3K

26 x 34 you can cover with a pair or two of speakers. At first it seems like you are trying to cover the entire space. The planters and rock speakers are nice because they blend into the landscape more easily. Niles makes very good outdoor marine grade speakers.

May I actually suggest these or the step up?
We installed 2 pair in our outdoor area and they sound great.

My speaker selector/switch is very much like this one. Each pair has their own volume control. Still rocking Cads favorite piece of tech, the glorious but discontinued Chromecast Audio. Good grief those things are great.

I have four of the Atrium 8 Weatherproof Speakers in my backyard. I have had them for over 2 years with zero issues. They have amazing sound for basically 8 inch bookshelf speakers. Highly reccommend.
